Having major issues

Took the 15-22 to the range yesterday and everyother shot was a failure to fire. It hit and dented the primer but no boom. Then about everyt 8-10 shots the extracted case would get knocked off before it should and get stuck. I have the jp trigger springs in the gun but it worked fine before.
I just recently bought the barrel vises and shoowrench and took the barrel out cleaned ect and i used my torque wrench with crow foot and torqued to 180 in lbs that ive read recommeded. I tried putting back the factory trigger springs today thinking maybe thats the problem but still doing the same exact thing. The only thing I can think of is it got over torqued on the barrel and sucked it into the poylmer just a hair. But on inspection everything looks fine. I really don't know what to do. Can anyone offer some advise. Am I going to have to send it in to S&W.

Before all this was happeing it would have the light hammer strike maybe 1 out of 50 rounds but I really didn't shoot it a whole lot so im not sure if it was a problem that was there that just got worse or if i created it by messing with the barrel.

Thanks for any help. I have about $1,000 into this gun it can't become a paper weight.

I guess I'm lost on this. It appears a lot of people are pulling BBL's for no other reason than to clean. I've built several 10/22s and when done, I never pull a BBL. It seems to be a fad with the 15/22 ??????

Did you clean and lube the bolt assembly and firing pin lately? My JP springs will be here tomorrow after a trigger job went south I am assuming.I did shoot 60 rounds yesterday with only three FTFs using Fed. Bulk and just loaded twenty to each mag to see if that helped. I would like to see no FTFs but it is a 22 though so that maybe asking too much. I am not so sure that there MAYBE some firing pin issues with some of these guns. I hate I did the trigger job so far if that turn out to be my issue.

FTF

I just got my 15-22 last weekend. I have put 750 federal and a bunch of Rem through it yesterday and this A.M. at the range. I would say 1 every 15 was FTF until I started firing my batch of CCI. Not a single FTF in 500 Rounds.

I guess I am going to have to purchase a whole lot more of those.....

Yea I keep it real clean, I havnet actually taken the firing pin out of the bolt and cleaned and lubed but I can't see the that being the problem the pin moves forward ealiy when pressed on the back.

I know this is a common problem with these guns when they first came out, and I bought mine pretty earliy on. Ive heard of the new ones haveing blue springs or something and mine dosen't. I've had the jp springs so i never botherd. Like I said it was never this bad before but I don't have allot of rounds through it before. Im at a loss. Im worried its from over torqueing the barrel but my simple thought would be if it is causeing a head space issue due to the barrel being sucked in it shouldnt work at all but it works half the time.

Ususall if I drop the bolt myself it fires then when it cycles itself it dosen't work, so I cear chamber and drop the bolt it works. So I dunno. I guess Im just going to have to contact smith and wession. Has anyone had to send there gun in for this problem. What did it cost and what was the turn around time.

I was using federal, CCI high velocites, and Whinchester bulk.

The federal and CCI would work everyother time, but the Whinchester stuff was a ftf every single round would not fire the primer.

Well I shot Fed. Bulk and CCI mini last week and got at least five per mag FTFs after the trigger job performed to specs. I would not think I would be going out on a limb thinking it is not a ammo issue either.

Yea I wish it was that but these are the same boxes i used before. I was just going over my notes and when i first got the gun and broke it in. Using the same Fed Ammo I have now I had 13 FTF out of 315 rounds. Now it is at least everyother round with the same ammo lot.

The winchester stuff never did work and the remington was always **** with it also but the Fed stuff seemed to be working fine. Maybe I'll try the cci tactical stuff. But its just seems to have all happened right after I took the barrel off. was my torque of 180inlbs wrong. Everywhere I read said 20ft lbs so I was under that I was only going to 15ft lbs.

This was all working with the jp tigger springs also. I have the orgnial springs back in now so I would think the hammer is accuatly being hit harder due to the tighter springs.

What really sucks is I've had the gun for over a year so theres no chance of s&w doing it as free warrenty work. Like I said Im at a loss as of what to do. Should I send it to smith and wession or take it to a gunsmith. All I know is its completly unsable (not to mention dangerous) as is. From what Ive heard they do not sell individual parts so I can't try replaceing the fireing pin.

What this the problem that was remided by them preplacing the original springs with the blue ones or was that to address antother issue. I guess I could try to get them to send me a new sping kit and see it that would work.

Not even the first time this one has been stipped besides the barrel nut so Unless the torque spec I used was off I can't see what I did that could have casued it.
That being said I guess its pretty ovious that what ever is wrong in someway happened when I took the barrel off. I guess Im just trying to get some advice on where to go from here. Maybe something to try to fix it myself or some advice on how to go about getting it fixed.

nvshooter, read the manual past the first warranty statement and you will see there is a lifetime warranty. However, after pulling the barrel, I don't know if that voids the warranty. Ask them and find out.

Well thats good to know. I don't remeber ever sending in any warrenty card when I got it but I can't find one with my paper work I am the original owner and I have a recipet from the store I bought it from so hopefully that is enough.

I guess worst case, 15ft lbs over torqued it and sucked it in some. I would imagine all that would be required to fix it is to replace the metal ring in the reciver. The only other two things I could think it would be are the trigger springs or the Fire pin. To bad they don't sell parts for this it will probably cost more in shipping fees than it would be to just buy a new part and replace it.

Does your firing pin stick out when you mash the plunger with a flat object against the bolt where the hammer strikes ? Find the thread on that one. I ran across it last week. Mine does not.One owner said a CSR/tech told him the newer serial numbers did not stick out because they were inert pins. Mine is a DVE serial number. Just bought it in late Jan. of this year. I am still hoping the JP springs help. I have never taken the barrel of and lack the tools.

well thanks. Like I said im no gunsmith but Ive worked on my own guns for years this isn't the first time i've had one apart. Chances are I messed something up and thats fine... stuff happens I can live with it. Just seems weird the amount of people on here that have successfully taken the barrel nut off and re tourqed it without any problems. I mean theres really nothing to mess up on it I wasn't just blindly tigneting I acutally under tourqed it 5ft lbs less than some were suggesting.

Yea it comes out quite a bit, To hard to hold it out and measure it with two hands but yea. I do notice the area where the hammer strikes the pin looks like it has a dent on on the bottom part of it. Almost like it is only hitting the bottom 1/4 of it. But the face of the hammer has a elevated part in the middle so i think its from that.

This...just send it to them. Worst case senario they find something that they KNOW that is user error or modification and they charge you for the parts/repair. Best case senario they fix it for no charge. Remember to remove any accessories before sending it to them

I have a newer model and had NO issues out of the box with all kinds of ammo - then I tried to do the trigger mod (modding the blue springs)- and had almost 50% FTF - I ordered the yellow spring kit and have put another 3000+ rounds with maybe 20FTF. I am not sure if it was the trigger mod that was causing the issue specifically or if I had failed to re-assemble correctly. I have noticed when removing FCG that unless all pins are correctly seated when re-assembling the hammer has a tendency to hit to one side - creating an indent on the round, but a ftf.
