Having Problems

I have taken my MP 15-22 out the last couple of weekends and I have had a couple of problems. First off, on several occasions, when I pull back to load the first round, the slide doesn't close all the way causing me to have to re-slide and eject the live shell. Also, today, my first round in the clip wasn't going off. The hammer would hit the round and leave a mark but wouldn't fire. This can be dangerous and it concerns me. After I ejected the first live shell, the rest feed through fine. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem. I have had the gun for a few months now and I'm not sure how to fix this. Thanks for any help!

how are you chambering the first round? are you pressing the bolt release or are you pulling back the charging handle and releasing it? if you are pulling the charging handle, do you pull it all the way back and release the handle from there? gotta make sure you aren't riding the charging handle at all because that is a common cause for the bolt to not fully close.

also make sure the magazine is fully seated.

i guess it is possible that the top most round is not angled correctly.

Additionally, you should lock the bolt in the open position before you insert the magazine. Then press the bolt latch paddle to release the bolt and chamber the first round.

These weapons are heavily recoil dependent. Do you have the weapon securely into your shoulder and are you squared to the target? You might also consider the recoil spring and weight if any within it.

I was shooting Remington 40 grain thunderbolt. Probably put 200 rounds through today. And I usually pull the charging handle all the way back and then guide it forward.

And yes I was using a sw mp 15-22 25 round mag

The gun would basically dry fire but when I ejected the round it had a dent in the back. It was always the first round in the mag that would get dented but not fire. And then the rest would feed fine. Except for when the slide wouldn't go forward all the way.

That sounds like your problem. Pull the charging handle all the way back and let it go, or better yet, lock bolt open and use the release button.

So I want it to slam shut on its own then? That sounds like it could be my problem then with both the slide getting stick and the first round not being fired. Thanks for your help.

Yes, absolutely. Never ride the bolt closed on an AR-pattern rifle. (Especially one that doesn't have a forward assist, then it's permissible if you need to load quietly, but that's not the case here, so...never mind).
This is all covered in the "Loading" section of your M&P 15-22 user's manual.
You did read the user's manual, right?

Yeah, that is probably what is happening then. It is a common error.

Here is a video link I found for you explaining it.

edit: but yeah, it is probably better to pull back the charging hand and lock back the bolt, insert the magazine, then hit the bolt release lever.

The manual from S&W says to seat the mag with the bolt open. The very first round I tried to fire when I bought my rifle would not feed, I had tried to load the rifle with the bolt closed.

S&W manual page 15

"Pull the charging handle all
the way back and press the
bottom of the bolt catch down
and release pressure on the
charging handle. This will lock
the bolt in the open position.
(Figures 15 & 16)
• Return charging handle fully
forward until it locks and
remove finger from bolt catch."

Page 16
• Keeping your fingers away from the ejection port and keeping
the muzzle pointing in a safe direction, press in on the top of the
thumb piece of the bolt catch. This will release the bolt, allowing
it to move forward and feed a round from the magazine into the
chamber. The firearm is now loaded and will fire if the safety
selector lever is set on "FIRE" and the trigger is pulled.

S&W replaced my bolt for this reason. Mine was also firing out of battery.

Mine is still acting up and needs to go back in.

I get first-bullet-in light strikes, but I also get mid-mag light strikes. My gun still fires out of battery, but not as bad as it was before. The bolt has to be within 1/8" or so of closed before the hammer will fall now.

For the record I have 8 .22 rifles and 4 .22 pistols. I have a 10/22 that will shoot absolutely anything and cycles everything through it. I have let that gun go years between cleanings.

I see no reason to not expect the same reliability from an S&W 22.
