Just received a Model 17 that I bought off line on GB, and it has a little too much endshake cylinder. I don't happen to have my books with me; can anyone confirm that the headspace should be 0.012-0.018 on these .22's, like it would be on a recessed Model 19, etc? I'd rather not overstretch the yoke, if I can help it.

Thanks

The yoke is stretched, or shimmed, until the end-shake just disappears. You cannot over-do it to the point of reducing headspace because the cylinder will reach a point where it will not turn freely or cannot be closed. Headspace is determined by the height of the extractor.

That seems like a pretty large B/C gap to me...I think 6-8 thousands is closer to factory specs. Brownells sells cylinder and yoke shims depending on your needs...you can also as suggested have the yoke stretched but usually that's a gunsmith type fix whereas the shims are DIY...

It will seem a lot more logical if you read the original post. The question was about headspace, not the barrel-cylinder gap or end-shake.

Delete my first post please ALK has corrected me. I could have sworn the OP mentioned endshake, wrong words same fix right?

When you stretch the yoke barrel the end shake will disappear. .002 end shake is ideal. You will notice the barrel air gap will grow was you tighten up the end shake.

The head space is controlled by the center "boss" of the ejector. Never file this boss down!

Head space on a 22 mag is .004-.008 so the 22LR should be the same. I would not worry about a high head space reading, if you are experiencing problems with case ruptures or mis fires, then look into it further.
