Do you have to go out and spend a few grand just to hear a little better? I'm 68 and the hearing is slipping a little, not real bad but not 100% either. Any less costly things to try?
Anyone use the "game ear" that was made for hunting?
Looking for some ideas.
Thanks,
Mick

Depends on how well you want to hear. Game ear or similar devices increase all sounds in all frequencies. Your hearing loss is not even across the sound spectrum. With the digital hearing aids, they are programed to increase the specific frequencies you need.

Another thing is occulsion (s). When you stick something in your ear, it blocks sound from entering except for what comes in through the microphones. Basically, when you talk, you hear your voice as if you were in a barrel. Eating sounds are also magnified in your head.

I blew $5,000. on the molded ones that sit even with the outside of the ear opening. Bad ! After 5 years, I just switched to the behind the ear type (very small). They have the clear tube that goes in your ear canel. They are fantastic ! No occulsion whatsoever.

If you want to hear like you did 20 years ago, you have to spend the $$.

Hope this helps.

I have used electronic muffs for watching TV with good results.
Get a hearing test from a professional to find which frequencies you need help with.
Make sure the aids they recomend will handle those frequencies.
Insurance may help with cost.
Do not wear aids when shooting.

I got hearing aids a couple of months ago.. The ones behind the ear.

I think the are great. I don't cock my head to hear people talk.

I can filter out loud background noises in restaurants and such and don't say "What?" as much as I use to.

I didn't get the more expensive ones that supposedly filter out Tinnitus. I've lived with it for 45years, I guess I can stand it a while longer.

Getting a hearing aid made a huge difference in my life at age 40. Now, it's 13 years later and i couldn't function at all without one. If there's a Costco with a hearing aid center near you, you can save up to 50% on the cost of a new one...still going to be $1K or so each....

My hearing started going to hell years ago due loud explosions w/out ear muffs/plugs. I have considered going with an aid, but realized most of the stuff I couldnt hear wasnt important enough to listen to. I HAVE had to start wearing glasses at times though

I got my behind the ear hearing about 6 months ago, don't know how I got by without. Costco has some really nice ones for about $1300.

I lost approx. 50% of my hearing due to a service related issue. Had little choice but to get the hearing aids. They were not cheap.
I got along at home with a Walker's Game Ear and it doubled for use when turkey hunting.

If you have a service related issue, go the the VA. They supplied mine and they work very well.

I've had my hearing aids since the early eighties. Miracle Ear, in the ear. Not the in the canal ones. Can't remember how much, but they were worth it. Still working almost 30 years later. When I take them in for cleaning or repair, they can't believe that they're still working. My particular model has been discontinued for years. You get what you pay for. -Ed.
