Heart - Stairway to Heaven Led Zeppelin - Kennedy Center Honors

Wow, it has been quite a while since I have heard Stairway to Heaven or any other Zeppelin for that matter. It actually got me moving in my recliner while listening to it.

We went to see ELO with Heart opening on Aug. 13, 1978 at the Pontiac Silverdome. Wife was 7 months pregnant with our first set of twins so they got to go as well. Went mainly for ELO but came away a Heart fan as well.
They can rock.

Nice performance. Looks like Zep was pretty moved by it.

Okay my honest opinion, I love Heart and the Wilson sisters but I don't think they did that great of a job with that song.

Farmer, I agree partly with you. I thought Ann's vocals were not as strong as they should have been, but Nancy's intro on acoustic guitar was very nice. She has quite a reputation as a guitarist, and well deserved. The overall production of the song, with the choirs, and standout performances by Jason Bonham, the drummer, and the lead guitarist, whose name I don't know, made it a worthy tribute. You could tell Robert Plant was very moved by what he saw.

Back when I was in high school, Heart was a local, undiscovered band. We dreamed of a date with Nancy Wilson, but she was out of our league. We were in the small town of Bothell; she was an Eastside girl. So we settled for slow dances to Stairway to Heaven with the girls in our school. I'd still go for a date with Nancy, but it's looking less likely as time goes by.

One better. I grew up in Magnolia, where their drummer (at the time) Michael Dessrosier lived. I went to school with his younger brother Desmond. I would listen to them practice in Mike's basement. For a pre-pubescent boy to have his first "feelings and stirrings" to Ann and Nancy up close and personal is a lasting memory.

I'm not sure whom I dislike more ... Heart- A no talent duo of toads or Dead Zeppelin ... The most boring annoying band in the history of music. If I'm driving and any Zeppelin music is played, I race to change stations.

Led Zeppelin: Jimmy Page, one of if not the best guitarists ever, and John Bonham, one of if not the best rock drummers ever, and the vocal instrument of Robert Plant. That's hard to beat.

Perhaps Cream, with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker, also at or near the top of the lists for guitarists and drummers, and with Jack Bruce's vocals and bass, comes closest.

Rounding out the top bands ever, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who. The Brits, drawing heavily from American influences, made rock and roll into the art form that it became.

I'm so thankful that I grew up in the 60s and 70s, entering adolescence with that soundtrack. The older I get, the more I appreciate it. Music will never be as compelling and enthralling again, I don't think.

Thanks for posting the vids, you guys.

Don't sweat it. I'm the guy who gets funny looks because I don't consider Bruce Springsteen as anything special and will say so out loud.

A late sister in law had a major hate thing going for the Beatles, so it can happen to any band.

True, Springsteen gets on my nerves, he has a few good songs but he gets old over and over, He did have a Boatload of songs however.

Did anyone complain and whine when "the Boss" got a Presidential Medal of Freedom"

Its all ok, one man's music is another man's noise.

My wife and I went to a Springsteen concert in Giants Stadium atleast fifteen years ago. We had seats on the field, was a fantastic evening, the energy of the crowd was amazing.

Billy Joel in Madison Square Garden was another great show!

For me, it begins and ends with Bruce. Never understood why some folks don't care for him, but that's fine. My only regret is that I've only seen his live show four times, but three of 'em were with while Clarence and Danny were still with us.

The hardest-working man in rock and roll, and the best band live I've ever seen.

Sorry for the thread drift. I went back last night and watched the Kennedy Center performance again, and upon reflection, I think Ann's vocals were better than I had thought. The live video, though, left the Kennedy Center show far behind.

I'm glad the three Zeps who were there enjoyed it, and I wonder at the same time how often they thought, "We did it so much better." And to consider the hundreds, probably thousands of times they performed it. A few of those shows, they might even be able to remember.....;)
