I know there was recently an inquiry about using 231 with the 255 gr. SWC. Just the other day I shot 5.4 grs. of 231 behind my cast 255 gr. SWC (RCBS mold) and it worked just fine. I shot this out of my 3" 625 but did not have a chance to chronograph it yet and compare it to heavy charges of 2400 or Power Pistol. I used ACP brass and a rather light taper crimp and I didn't notice any bullets jumping the crimp.

I prefer AA9, which is similar to 2400. The max published load of 12.0 gives me 930fps with a 250lwfn out of a 5" barrel. The gun can stand a lot more than 12.0, but that's a personal decision. I'm comfortable adding powder until I get +1000fps.

I use 6.5 grains of Unique behind either the old Lyman 452423, 245 grain SWC or the 255 grain SWC in either .45 AR or .45ACP cases in my M25-2 for excellent accuracy. The cases extract with no problem; primers show no signs whatsoever of excess pressure. I use a taper crimp as well, but perhaps a roll crimp would be better.

Thank you men.. SC and pinky. I remember both of you having bullets that were in the 280/290 grain area...The wfn sounds about right.

HF,
I have several loads for my H&G #502 240gr LSWC that are what I would consider "heavy loads."

One is using the "Miracle Powder"(as some have dubbed it)SR4756 the other is with 2400. I also have a load with a MILSURP powder called WC820 that loads like AA#9. My load is what pinky has posted above.

The two loads I mentioned first drive that bullet well over 1000fps from a 4" barrel.

If you want the exact data, email me. I don't want to post those loads on the web. They are published loads but from older manuals.

What will you be shooting them out of? I wouldn't recommend them for a M1917 although, one of the loads I have is one Elmer Keith used and recommended.

FWIW

Skip & Pinky. It was along thread about loads. I "THINK" I remember both of you, have a VERY long custom? mold bullet that you were using...
I remeber you did Skip...

HF,
The threads that I posted these pictures in may be gone.
I think this is the one you are referring to.

The bullet on the right isn't mine though, it's Paul5388's. He was kind enough to send me some for the test. They are great bullets. The one I have is the one in the Speer #8 manual under the 45AR loads.

It is a H&G #502, 240gr SWC. It is a great bullet for the ACP revolvers.

Any loads I have for those bullets would be the same as Paul used in his posts. Hopefully he will be around soon and share them!

Our friend Chunkum, RIP, had me load some of those bullets, on the right in Skip's picture, with 13.0 gr of 2400. They normally weigh in the neighborhood of 270 gr and delivered 960 fps MV out of my 5" M625-4. He intended to shoot them out of a M1917, which we did, after I did the preliminary work.

I used 2004 vintage Alliant 2400 and an OAL of 1.361" for that set of data.

The same load with a 255 gr Laser Cast produced 1044 fps MV at 1.23" OAL. I think seating that deep accounted for the majority of the velocity increase and probably raised pressures accordingly.

The group buy on Castboolits, for a reasonable copy of that bullet, is supposed to be getting to me in the next week or so.

Yes Sir, That is the one! Thank You. Good looking slug.Do you know were a old shooter can pick those up?

That bullet on the right looks like a RCBS 45-270-SAA. Handloader magazine # 254 had some loads for it in .45 AR.

I tried that load for the RCBS 45-270-SAA from Brian Pearce's article in Handloader in my 625-8. Very impressive, I must say.

I believe the second bullet from the right is a RCBS 45-255-KT. It weighs very close to 270 gr in my alloy. The major difference between it and the bullet on the right is the seating depth. The RCBS seats much deeper, as can be seen in Skip's picture.

Skip,

According to Matt, the group buy is there and waiting a test run to see if the diameter as cast is acceptable. I'm expecting it sometime in the next week or so.
