The DA trigger pull on my new 686-6 is quite heavy and cocking the hammer feels a little rough. Should I have an action job done or shoot it a while first?

Strip it, clean it and lube it first. That alone has greatly improved the action feel of many a new S&W revolver; odds are it's a little dry in there, might have some gummed up shipping oil, and often the new guns have metal shavings to clean out, and occasionally a bur or two to file down.
Then shoot and dry fire a lot.
In time, if you're still unhappy with the double action feel, look into a good revolversmith's work, or you can learn some useful basics if you're a do-it-yourselfer type.
But starting with an action job might be a waste of money.
Clean, lube, get to know backwards and forwards, then decide if significant changes are needed.

All the new stainless revolver I've handled and owned all have rough finished extractors and I take a stone to them and clean the burrs.

My own thinking is to do the dry firing before taking the side plate off and lubing.
Seems like the smoothing action of firing will be less if there is lube between the metal parts.
Just my thoughts on the subject, I don't have any way of verifying them.
In the long run, the action will improve with use.
I just took the side plate off of my new M640 Pro, after 150 rounds of live fire, and about 1000 dry fires.
It was not dirty inside and I didn't see any metal shavings. I think there is less chance of shavings in guns made with MIM parts. They are not machined, as I understand things.
Next up is my M686 SSR. I just put a little anti corrosion lube on the pivots and sliding parts. Maybe not too little, as I know that I will need to wipe up a little excess for a week or so. I have been using Corrosion-X for this process.
The revolver has a different feel after lubing, as expected.

Thanks for posting your issue. My new 686 is very disappointing in da and sa. The hammer is stiff also. Not shot much nor cleaned or lubed yet just tried out. It's new and I'm hoping it just needs servicing. My gp100 is way smooth in comparison at this point.

It is easy to better the DA and SA on these with a set of Wolff springs. If you choose to do so get the Standard mainspring as it will be a nice improvement over the stock S&W but it will reduce your DA pull and give more consistent pulls. The SA reacts nicely to a lighter rebound spring.
These upgrades are not difficult or time consuming but don't open up your gun if you are not comfortable doing so. There are some parts that will likely have you doubting yourself, often a local shooting range may have an on hand person to do this.
As you continue to shoot the action will wear in and become 'smoother' during the pulls, however there are numerous areas that can be addressed to polish and continue to smooth out both the DA and SA of this gun. This becomes more advanced and should be done by someone skilled at this task.
Enjoy the gun, as you shoot it and break it in it will also leave behind some tell tale signs on parts showing wear patterns which are helpful when someone tackles the trigger and action polishing work.
