Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

Here are some pics of the S&W I bought from my 84 year old aunt, from my uncle's estate.

I took a belt sander and cleaned off the rust, it looks much better now.

What brand of belt did you use? Looks like it put the blue back on after removing the rust! Might work well on an RM. Great looking gun

Here are some closeups of the rust damage after a little cleanup. I used my Milwaukee sander and some 3M 40-grit. Looks good eh?

It's not too noticeable if you're just holding the gun and not taking closeups under a strong light.

The case hardening on the trigger and hammer are Superb!!!

Seriously, I used some 0000 super fine steel wool with some penetrating oil, veeeeeeery carefully, then a nylon toothbrush with some Hoppes #9, a few blasts of Remington gun solvent to the cylinder & bore, then a going over with more Hoppes inside & out, then a light film of gun oil for the bore & cylinders, paste wax for the grips and the whole gun.

I love the smell of Hoppes in the morning....smells like....old guns...

I have the original box in fair-to-good condition, and my aunt has the receipt. The original receipt (no price on it) is dated 1958 and the gun was originally purchased in PA in 1958. Another forum member told me the gun was one of the last pre-19 production.

If they do, they'll have to kick me out too. I've got about a dozen Rugers, and a half-dozen (looks around) Colts...even a Glock and a...Hi-point.

It looks alright, but it would look better if you get a can of the spray on chrome from the auto-parts store and make it shiny. Probably fill in some of the sanding marks, too.
