Hello. Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm from Cave Creek, AZ and just purchased an M&P Shield over the weekend. I'v owned many S&W pistols and revolvers over the years and have thought about a Shield for CCW and I had looked at the 2.0 version because of the better trigger but this one has a HYVE trigger and mag extension. The trigger felt so good when I saw this one I just had to have it.

I had difficulty field-stripping it and noted that the safety did not work and so negotiated a much lower price for that reason. It turned out the seller did not know much about the Shield and both field-stripping and safety problems were due to that lack of knowledge as it turned out.

When I got it home and did a full field strip and removed the action ejector block and safety. The original factory grease was on the inside of the slide and my initial observation that the pistol had not gotten much use was affirmed.

Interestingly, I was able to get the safety to work until I installed it in the frame. I called HYDE and asked if the trigger could be causing the problem and was told that the trigger bar extended further than the original factory specs to take up trigger play and blocked the safety. He told me that if I would grind 30 thousands from the end of the bar it would allow the safety to work. (I know many want to remove the safety but I'm old-school and like the idea of a manual safety I can engage if need be). I have not done anything as yet and will ponder that idea after I get some range time in.

I looked at pics and info on the Shields and noted that in many descriptions that there was simply a hole to check brass color but mine has a lever on the top with lettering that if it is raised there is a cartridge in the pipe. I also noticed that unlike many other pics my pistol has a heavily textured grip.

I'd like to know the manufacture date but don't have the box and codes. The serial number is HLD14XX and so unless some one here can give me some info I'll have to call S&W to find that out.

I'd appreciate any feedback that I could get about the age of the pistol or whether it was ordered with a different grip.

Thanks.

I think you have the California version of the Shield - check to see if you can pull the trigger and release the striker without a magazine in.

Hello welcome to the forum. Yes California compliant version, you have a custom stimpling job. I have a 1.0 with a Hyve trigger that I installed. Sounds like who ever installed the trigger in that gun did follow the installation instructions completely (i.e filing the trigger bar) Look on You Tube and search Hyve Trigger Installation in Shield. there are a few videos on this...find the one that best suits you...i watched them all before I did mine. Pay attention to the fishing line trick (or you could use a piece of doubled up thread) You sound like you have some knowledge when it comes to working on guns so you shouldn't have any problems. 1.0's have gritty triggers because of the striker block used, there is also a You Tube vid on correcting this but you need to remove the rear sight. 2.0's have a slightly rounded striker block. Apex also makes one that's rounded. I will replace mine with the Apex when I replace the sights with TFO's. I also have a Hyve mag release extension and (4) 8rd magazines with Hyve +2 extensions. My 7rd has a Strike Industries +2 EMP extension. I didn't like the fit of the Strike extension on the 8rd mag. I can't help you with the serial number or manufacturing date...best to call S&W Customer Service.

Thanks Guys. I did call Customer service and the born-on date is 11/21/2015.

I have owned a couple of hundred pistols of all types along with 50 or so wheel guns and have done my share of minor work on them. I didn't have any difficulty removing the internals and getting them back in after i looked at a couple of youtube vids.

I suspected that the grip was custom, it is very comfortable and fits my hand well. I'll check out the youtube installation for the trigger.

I got the pistol with the HYVE trigger, 2 8-round mags, one more with the HYVE mag extension and a kydex carbon fiber IWB holster for $420 OTD. It also has a matching "punisher logo" striker plate (not my thing but what the heck).

Someone put a few bucks into this and did not shoot it much. I was surprised to see the grease on the center of the slide.

Thanks again for the info. I'm going to like it here...

i LOVE Cave Creek! The little town just minutes north of me. Finally got to try Big Earl's, and it's now on my 'stop' list when I have the time. Welcome, and glad to see you got your questions answered.

Thought I'd provide an update to my original post.
I indicated that the frame safety did not engage and after the info I got here I called HYVE and they did indeed indicate that the trigger install was likely done incorrectly and the trigger bar was not trimmed.
I looked on youtube and found the info that was given to me here and proceeded to gently file the bar and reinsert it into the pistol until the safety would engage firmly. I used a small fine file at first and then used an Emory board for the final trimming and smoothing. The safety works perfectly now.
I did make certain when I was working that the trigger safety functioned correctly and that the work on the frame safety would not compromise the trigger safety.
In addition I got a 10% off eBay code and purchased a Crimson Trace green laser (along with a Bladetech kydex IWB holster) that should be arriving today. Total cost was $156.60 with free shipping.
I have CR red lasers on a couple of my other carry pistols/revolvers and have been very happy with them.
Now I have to get some range time in. Thanks again for the assistance and warm welcome.

Welcome from SoCal. I was just visiting a friend in Carefree late October!

Greetings from the Oregon Coast!

I love Cave Creek! We spent two weeks in Scottsdale in May, and I went up to CC to do some hiking and rockhounding.

Two weeks in AZ, and that was the only place I saw anyone open carry.

Your Shield 1.0 is very similar too mine. I have a red Hyve trigger and I wrapped all (5) my black Hyve +2 extensions with grip tape to help protect them from marring when I eject them. Hyve currently has a couple of bucks off for their extensions plus they dropped their regular price also...they used to cost $30...now $25.19. The problem is having a Hyve extension as a carry mag, makes the gun hard to conceal. I added a Strike Industries +2 extension to my 7rd mag which gives the gun a nice grip and still keeps it concealable. Your gun came with a 7rd mag and an 8 rd mag when new...you sure the previous owner didn't install that Hyve Ext on the 7 round mag? Also I installed a Hogue rubber grip on my 1.0 which adds a little width to the gun grip and gives me a better feel.

Welcome from SW PA. Nice pistol. Just visited CC in late October, had a drink and bite to eat across from Harold's at the road house.
