I'm new to this forum. Also a state permit to carry holder x 6 mos. Grew up around guns with family law enforcers. Just recently decided to get a permit so now I'm ready to make a purchase. I'm thinking of a 38 special, Dad's suggestion? I'm a small framed female. I've shot a 1911, 357, Glock & Baretta @ the range. Dad is pushing the 38 on me. Sons are pushing me to buy a Baretta. Hubby couldn't care less. Undecided? Any ideas? Are there any women on this forum?

Ther are other women on this site that may be able to give you some direction.

I would suggest heading to a range and renting some of the handguns and test firing them. The most important thing is to find one that you are comfortable with, that you shoot well and meets your carry needs. (Just my opinion of course).

Welcome aboard from WI! This is best place to learn and share all things Smith & Wesson! :)

Snowwhite, welcome from North Carolina. Pick the one you like and can shoot the best-nothing else counts.

Welcome from the panhandle of West Virginia.
My wife loves her 4" 66-3 .357 Magnum. I carry a model 442 .38 Special. What's really important is how does the gun feel in your hand? Can you reach the trigger comfortably? Can you handle the trigger pull without throwing off your point of aim?
I like my snubby but it takes a lot of practice to shoot accurately.

Thanks for welcoming me & the advise everybody.:) I'm going to make my third trip within a 6 month period to the range next week. I think I need more experience firing to make sure I choose the right one for me.

Welcome aboard from the great state of Pennsylvania!

Welcome snowwhite, my wife carries a Taurus .38 revolver loaded with Hornady critical defense +P ammunition. She had a dream that she had trouble racking the slide on her pistol and didn't want to have that happen are real. Hence the revolver. The important thing is that she feels comfortable with it.

Welcome from Texas snowwhite. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.

Good advice from Biker Bill. You want to find that gun that feels good to YOU and can deliver the round accurately.

My usual advice is to choose the largest caliber that meets the above description.

Good hunting on your quest.

Remember the joy is in the quest.
