Yes, NYC is abysmal for ownership and the surrounding counties are a close 2nd. That said I have a range or two I can visit but in typical NY style there is often a wait at popular times or its being used for LE training, or I can pay a few hundred dollars and join a private range about a half hour away.
I will get some pictures up in with questions in the appropriate forums.
As far as back story they were from my uncle who served in the navy in WW2. He was an Italian kid from Brooklyn who couldn't swim and didn't like the water

Unfortunately that's about 15 years away which coincides nicely with the predicted time that social security is supposed to run dry and cuts payout by 25 percent
