Hi, I see a lot of members here from Texas. I have grown up shooting handuns from an early age; revolvers and semi auto's. Suprisingly, I have never owned a Smith and Wesson; mostly Colt, Ruger and Springfield Armory. I have recently become the owner of my grandfather's service revolver and would like to find out more about it; at the very least, what do I have. He was employed with the Oklahoma Hiway Patrol for years; later with the Oklahoma City Police Department and spent the end of his carrer as a private detective often traveling internationally on cases. He never spoke a whole lot about his work (though now I wish he had as I am sure they would have been fascinating stories). I remember him telling me that in his tenure with the Hiway Patrol he and others had fired on the vehicle of Bonnie and Clyde on one of their numerous passes through Oklahoma. I can only assume that it was this revolver that I now posses that was used. This revolver has the serial number 440899 stamped on the square butt. It looks very much like the "victory" models that I have seen. However, it has no lanyard ring and when the cylinder is closed there is no large knurled end on the ejector rod like I see on the "victory" models but more of a detent activated "pin" that engages the ejector rod. There is knurling on the end of the end ejector rod. There are no other stampings or identifying marks other than the standard Smith and Wesson markings and 38 S&W spc ctg stamped on the barrel. During it's life it has seen much work by the Smith and Wesson factory. It is on it's third barrel (currently 2", not sure what it was originally) and it's second cylinder. The trigger pull is right at 2 pounds SA and the DA is quite smooth and obviously lightened to some degree. I'm excited to find this forum and am looking forward to any information members can provide that would help guide me in my search to learn more about this revolver and it's history.
