Hello, new guy here!

Hello all!
I’ve come to this thread a newbie to firearms. A short story, I recently came across a beautiful looking revolver (lost out ). I never took the time to appreciate the history in guns, having never really handled or been around weapons in my life. My grandfather was a World War II vet, and my father a shorter time in the army. But even so, not around guns. Back to the revolver, I came across it rummaging a local estate sale online auction. Having no clue about revolvers, I began to research revolvers, sizes, styles, power, accuracy, etc….low and behold the revolver I stumbled upon is a triple lock. My excitement grew day by day as I read and watched videos of this wonderful looking weapon. I also came across this forum and began reading all sorts of posts of others who share the same intrigue and attraction to these revolvers. It’s been fun reading all these posts and seeing all the other types of revolvers. I lost my father as a teenager, but this seems to be right up his alley and probably tells me where my interest comes from. Long story short, I missed out this time on a beautiful revolver because I just do not have the discretionary $$$ at the moment. The fund $ has started though! And I hope to one day own one of those fine historical pieces. Until then, HELLO! I’ve joined the ranks!

Edit: decided to show you a pick of what I could not bring home. Hopefully there is a next time.

Also, where should a young guy like myself be best to come across such a find again?? Suggestions welcome.

You've come to the right place for S&W information; great information here and very knowledgeable folks willing to share. Welcome aboard hope you become a regular. If you use the search button at the top you can access many previous threads on Triple Locks and just about everything else S&W has made for the last 170 years or so. Where to find Triple Locks? Best bets these days are the auction sites or other S&W collectors (there's a classified section of the Forum where you can ask about items you'd like to buy, and buy/sell). You might bump in to a Triple Lock at a gun show but I see them rarely at shows and the usual hunting spots (gun shops, pawn shops). Here's the only one I own and it is scratched up a bit; it came from a fellow collector here. Again, welcome and enjoy your new interest and soon likely to become a new addiction.

Don't let the price of Triple Locks and Registered Magnums discourage you...some collectors chase those for years before they find the one they want at a price they can afford. Study the more common models and buy the best ones you can afford and then enjoy them. Good examples will usually appreciate in value even if you shoot them.

Welcome to the S&W Forums! I guess the best advice I can give is to exercise patience and keep your eyes open. Haunt your local gun shops and any pawn shops that sell handguns. Make friends with those who work in the firearms department and let them know what you are looking for. Visit gun shows, once in a while a gem will turn up at a show. Watch the for sale section here at the forums.

Welcome from a new member in Vermont. You will find great information here and try not to be intimidated. There is every level of enthusiast here. I live in a rural area and Smith's are hard to come by. I always look online but I am old school and like to put the gun in my hand, so gun shops are about it. Check your local ones out and look for the one that is doing the most business. We have several that are very nice, large layout remodelled and such but not much action. On the other hand I have one that is tiny, and always has beat up trucks in the yard. That is my spot. They are always buying, selling and trading. only spot that gets used Smith's. Don't hesitate to call around to gunshops outside your normal driving area. They likely won't respond to emails and won't call you when they get one in but they will tell you if they have one in front of them.

If money is an issue you might find a nice gun that is simply not as desirable or has a barrel cut down or some such work that makes a non-collectable. Try to learn from the forum all you can about what to look for when buying a used gun. And don't be dissappointed if you pay too much or that perfect gun isn't so great once you get it home and research it. We've all done it, at least I have. Good luck.

Sorry (maybe) you missed out on that TL.

Sometimes when you don't get what you think you want, it can be a blessing. There's a lot of 'dogs' out there when it comes to TLs (and all guns for that matter).

That one looks nice and original, but that's only one small photo. What did it sell for? Do you have more photos or a link to an auction where it sold on-line? I've made many feel better about not buying something that looked good, but had issues. Maybe we can critique it for you and you might not feel so bad about not getting it. TLs have been around over 100 years, so many are refinished or monkeyed with, and over priced.

Knowledge about what you're shopping for translates to good buying decisions and can save you money as well!

Also, if you find one you're considering, post it here for expert eyes and advice.
