hello everyone,
i would like to firstly thank anyone in advance for any help you may offer.
my problem is pretty simple to explain,my 645 will fire perfectly normal a few times, then all of the sudden,it will fire 2-3 shots with a pull of the trigger..completely randomly i may add, sometimes from the first pull,or sometimes halfway thru the mag?
not only is it scary to have this happen while trying aimed fire,i am also worried about safety issues..ie //the slide bashing me in the face..lol..
i am thinking possibly the firing pin is sticking somehow,i am not very religous about cleaning i must say..i know..not good..but would not being absurdly religous about cleaning cause this?
i generally clean it every 100 rounds or so..if that is the problem, then pretty poor combat weapon..if you ask me,i am use to shooting thousands of rounds from my ak without a glitch.
i wonder if a weak firing pin spring would cause this?
i would think it would do it all the time if that is the issue.
anyhow, thanks for your time if you read this..i appreciate all input.

I'd be inclined to suspect a failed sear interrupt or damaged sear surfaces. Note, this is not only unsafe, simple posession of a firearm in this condition is a Federal Felony with IIRC a 15 years prison sentence. Technically, what you have now is classified as a Machine Pistol by the ATF and it being due to a malfunction does NOT provide any protection from prosecution.

What I am telling you is that you do NOT want to shoot this gun in public until AFTER it's been repaired. I would also suggest that you contact S&W about having it repaired.

thank you very much for the input.
i had a similar thought about the issue regarding the sear,i just recieved it from brownells as a basic overhaul of the firearm,i purchased it used.
i also purchased a wolf spring kit.
i was worried about firing it in this condition, even though it is random, which led me to think possibly poor cleaning..however to cover my bases i ordered a sear and spring kit.
i was worried i may get hurt from it,possibly seriously.
i had no clue that it may be a ffl violation so thank you for that info(pretty ridiculous if you ask me)
i fired it many times,a part wears out and it slam fires and i am a crimminal?
thats garbage,i had no intent and it scared the **** out of me when it happenned..what good is it to have a pistol that is unsafe to fire?
anyhow,,thanks for the heads up and the advice on the sear..glad i purchasd one..just thought it would happen all the time if it was a faulty part.

I had the same problem with a glock and when I checked the firing pin channel there was a small peice of metal was binding the fireing pin and causing it to double fire. Cleaned it real good and the problem went away. I had bought the gun used so I have no idea how it got in there.

thank you,
that was my thought on this issue,i figure a faulty part is a faulty part and the problem would consistantly manifest itself.
just to be safe i purchased a spring kit and sear, dont knoew what the interupter is..but i am going to thouroughly clean the firing pin and carrier, install new sear and spring kit..then update everyone.
i thought about just doing a thorough cleaning of the f/p and testing,so i would know that was the problem prior to replacing springs/sear..but i dont want a fed wrap because of a faulty part..again..that is the most ridiculous law i have ever heard..like i want a faulty sidearm//oh well..i will just do it all.
would have liked to have diagnosed this properly, but better safe then sorry.
thanks again.

thanks for your advice handgunner356,
i am the type to fix things myself..diy..type guy.
i will give it the college try so to speak, and if it still happens..well..i am out of ideas and off to s/w it goes i guess.
i just get satisfaction from solving problems..be it cars,motorcycles,guns..whatever..but sometimes you gotta go to a pro.
thanks again!

While I find your initiative very commendable in your DIY, I really would like to suggest most sincerely that your follow the advice of handgunner356. This matter with you 645 should be looked at by the factory personnel. I think it goes beyond your interest in fixing the problem by yourself and goes to the heart of safety/security. The gun may have been abused or tinkered with by a previous owner and as such, unless you have credentials that would indemnify you against any claims for something tragic happening or something dealing with legal issues, you should let the people at the place where the weapon was made look into repairing this weapon. It just should not be that much of a decision. Any issues above what is causing it to malfunction could be addressed at the time it is fixed at the factory and those things would place you in a position to be able to protect yourself against something happening. It may look like an overreaction on my part but malfunctioning firearms that are not repaired by someone with tools, credentials, and factory involvement could be seriously problematic.

I know this is an old thread but just woundered what happened with the pistol?
