Help decide between M&P 40 with a 9conversion or just a M&P9

Get the dedicated 9mm model if you want to be absolutely sure of reliability.

i use 9mm mainly for the range and 40 for SD. if 357 Sig ammo was more reasonable, price-wise, i'd pursue a 357 barrel a little harder.

If you bump in to a .357 Sig barrel let me know 'cause I can't find one.

curious about why you're so negative about this.

i've had my conversion barrel for over a year and put about 1000 rds thru it with no problems.
i only use it for the range. i prefer shooting 40 to the 9, for SD.

let me chime into this thread again, there is absolutely no reliability issues with the conversion barrel. I do want to stress that you should get the Storm Lake "conversion" barrel. If you just buy a factory 9mm barrel, there is a little bit of slop in the barrel. the SL barrel is sized to fit in the .40 slide better

I was once on the same fence. I chose the M&P 40. I bought a 9 barrel and 9 mags too. I have only shot 400 rounds of 40 and well over 2,000 with my 9. Zero issues with either. Would i do it again the same way, you bet. Even though i rarely shoot the 40 i have that option quickly available. Hell for the longest time 9mm was hard to get around here, that why i was shooting 40 in the first place. Just opens up your options.

sure if you buy a 40 slide, 40 barrel and possibly a 40 spring.
basically you have to replace the entire slide assembly to do this.
and then you have to buy 40 mags.

So I am new to the M&P line. I just got an M&P 45 and a 9c. I have been a long time Glock guy and have a 17, 19, 23, 21. So now I am starting to get the M&Ps that I want. I am not a huge 40s&w fan and most of my guns are 9mm and 45. So I want a full size M&P 9mm but have seen many have done the 40-9 conversion. The .40 S&W rim is only slightly larger in diameter than the 9mm rim thanks to the high degree of case taper on the 9mm. What this means to YOU - and you can check this, is that a 9mm case WILL snap under your .40 extractor and get sucked out of a 9mm chambered barrel JUST FINE!

Think about it...when chambered the 9mm case is held in alignment by the barrel...when being extracted from the chamber at VERY high speed, the case CANNOT "move away" from the extractor until it has basically cleared the chamber...which means extraction is SOLID.

A LOT of people buy .40 S&W's and end up sticking 9mm barrels in them because 9mm ammo is dirt cheap, even more dirt cheap to reload, and has substantially less wrist-snapping kick.

funny you would ask. I have a .40 M&P CORE and I bought the Storm Lake 9mm conversion barrel.Let me tell you that this barrel worked perfectly. you do need to use 9mm magazines.

My suggestion is get the .40 and the conversion barrel. this way you are getting 2 guns for about 600 and a choice on what you want to shoot.

I have a M&P®40 PERFORMANCE CENTER® PORTED with the 5 inch barrel. Would the one you have work in my gun? If so what is the part number for that Storm Lake conversion barrel?

I have a 9FS and a 40 with a 9 conversion barrel. I run the 9 mags and it's dead nuts reliable. I would trust either one.

So if I were you I'd get the 40 and the conversion barrel. Two guns, more fun!
