Help for Haiti, who is giving???

The thread IS about "who is giving?", Mickey. Why don't the others just set up their own thread?

Reading the opening remarks I thought this topic was about who (what NATIONS) were giving, not individuals with philanthropic chips on their shoulder feeling the need to tell others how personally charitable they are while being condescending to others who might feel otherwise, right? Or did I miss something in the Capt's opening dialog?

Who feels the need to tell others that they give? If that is what this topic was supposed to be about... it really should be empty, shouldn't it?

I won't willingly give anything. I'm not a racist old SOB. I just think we in America need help. I can't afford to take full dose of one of my meds that I have to buy from Canada to be able to afford half dossage. This President has put us so far in the rears we'll never get out get out of debt. Stop giving away the farm!

I just think we in America need help.

Perhaps the federal govt should simply send each tax payer a bill for relief and rebuilding efforts around the globe to see how charitable Americans really are.

We've spent about a $trillion on nation building efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. That's about $3,000 per person in America. A family of four should pony up $12,000.00.

Obama has pledged $100,000,000.00 so far for Haiti. That's about 30 pennies per person, $1.20 for a family of four.

I think we should do everything nessasary to resue the poor souls caught under the rubbel. Also whatever it takes to keep them alive in the short term. I dont want to adopt them or give them wholesale residency in this country. There is a balance point.
This country has no business trying to bring the rest of the world up to our standard of liveing by a handfull of people playing robin hood with other peoples money. It wont work to start with and will just drag us down.
Yes, God does judge nations, not just indivigals on a personal basis. I cant explain, understand or speak for Gods actions or inactions. Yet I totaly belive and trust him.
Like it or not, our leaders are elected by the majority of us. Now yes, politicans lie to the gullible and uneducated to get elected. So on a indivigal basis, many of us arent represented the way we want. Yet the majority of the country elect the POSTUS.
Fortunately we are a country that is charatable in christian principals. I belive for the most part that is why this country overall has been blessed and protected from disasters that we see every year elsewhere in other parts of the world. If you notice, most if not all these mega disasters are always in the 3rd world heathen countrys. I belive there is a big religious reason for that!

Bush Jr (43) says if you want to send blankets, food and water... don't. "Just send your cash."

Bushie, your're doing a heck of a job!

You didn't seem to understand what GWB said (or maybe you didn't want to...)

Rather than individuals gathering up a bunch of 'stuff' and sending it down to a warehouse... give money to the organizations who use it to buy exactly what's needed in mass and get it delivered directly to the people in need.

He didn't say nor imply that we should send money directly to the Haitian government.

I donated on Friday at our local Red Cross office specifying Haiti relief fund .

LOL! It never crossed my mind that Bush was suggesting for people to send monies to a non existant Hatian government at P.O. Box Pile of Rubble.

There are those here in this thread speaking of putting their donated items on a truck. Bush says to just send cash, period. ["I know a lot of people want to send blankets or water. Just send your cash," Bush said] IMO, people can help by doing both.

I will give to those organizations providing aid that I know and respect. I'll give what I can and maybe then some. To ladder13, sipowicz and DCWilson and others: well said gentlemen. Thank you.
We are Americans and incredibly blessed as a country and as a people. We go to the aid of others, its what we do and I pray we always will.

One would hope so, Steve.
My company, my employer, which is large, donated $100K, and, in a letter emailed from the CEO to all employees explaining the donation, provided links to the Red Cross and a couple of other reputable charities. I am sure other companies are doing this as well.

Wow, this has been quite a response. I've been out camping for a few days and was amazed upon my return to find 11 pages. I was saddened to find so much ignorance and hate. Name one, just one president in the last century, who would have done anything different than the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Be honest, do really think that George Bush (take your pick), or Richard Nixon, John Kennedy etc., would not be sending money and troops to help??? Using the tragedy of Haiti to bash and demean to suit a political agenda is childish BS.

As noted in my original post, we as a nation step up. If this offends or troubles perhaps you might want to live somewhere else and not be so burdened and/or enjoy the pride I feel in being an American for this and many other reasons. It is who we are, and what we do as a people. I remain curious as to the participation of other nations in the relief efforts. For the record, that was my primary purpose in the OP.

Perhaps you recall a thread entitled "You could have heard a pin drop" that documented many of America's contributions to the world. I think Haiti is just going to be another example of America leading in a crisis as we usually do. Opinions and your mileage may vary...

All this give/don't give stuff is giving me a headache. As a compromise, I'm going to go around borrowing strangers cell phones for a quick call, then texting "Haiti" to 90999.

P.S. Of course I'm giving. In the words of Paulie Cicero - "What are we, animale?"

I am truly shocked and saddened by the lack of decency and compassion displayed by some of these posts. Makes you wonder.

Dag nabit, so am I:(
I hope my Hogue grips are nice.

I honestly don't believe you are that callous and uncaring. I get the feeling you are just trying to be provocative for attention. But if your whole life truly does revolve around a cheap set of grips that you have mentioned ad nauseam, I sure hope you enjoy them.

May God be with all in that tragic situation.
I'm sure I'm not as weary of the situation as they are, but I am still weary of it.

I've seen two good bits of advice:
If you want to give to Haitian relief, please do.
If you don't want to give, don't.

If you want to go there and help, please do, and Godspeed.
If you don't want to go and help, don't.

.....and moving along, we have:
