So, I was doing just fine until the whole assembly popped out of the frame (wasn't holding it tight enough!).

Anyway, I sort-of broke it while trying to remove those awful safety levers. I'm trying to get the thing back together, but I've no idea where this tiny spring goes?

Desperate to get it "fixed" for a range trip tonight!

Thanks in advance for any help!

*edit* It looks like it might be the trigger safety spring? With the gun looking like it looks now in the picture, the trigger safety doesn't appear to be working. I've no idea, though, or even how to put it back in?

*cries*

*EDIT*

Thanks for the help, all. This thread is done. :D

If the bottom part of the trigger is just flopping loose and doesn't return forward on its own, then the spring has indeed fallen out.

Just push the lower part of the trigger forward, insert the spring into the cavity above the pivot point, and flip the trigger back down.

My spring (and several replacements) has fallen out and I have given up replacing it. Trigger works fine without it, albeit without the safety feature. Not an issue since I only use this pistol at the range.

Yes, I figured that out. I put the spring back in. Yay!

However, I'm having a terrible time getting the assembly back into the frame. Is there a trick to doing it? It's under a lot of spring pressure, and I can't get the serial-number cutout to align with the serial number of the assembly. Been struggling for so long now.. *cries*

Is the hammer up or down in the cocked position?

It needs to be up (vertical) for the assembly to go back in the frame without fighting the tension of the hammer spring.

Watch the second of the videos linked in a prior post starting at about 30 mintues. It will show you how to get the assembly back in the frame.

Good luck. Check all youtube for complete break down, sure there is one on there show you step by step.

I don't mess with mine beyond a simple field strip cleaning and once in a while wipe out the firing pin chamber.

Still struggling, here. Now I'm having issues with just getting the safeties back on. Does anyone have a moment to give a helpless Brit a quick call? (Living in Seattle).

This video shows you more detail than you will ever need.

With regards to the safety levers, you are probably having trouble with the small spring on the left side of the firing assembly - looks like two wires sticking out of the frame. It's a U-shaped spring that can be removed and put back in after installing the levers.

But seriously - watch the video start to finish.

I'm making progress, thank you. I was indeed having problems with those two wires, but it makes sense now. The video makes mention of a washer which goes underneath the hammer spring. I don't have that washer. Is that part of the trigger kit the video is talking about?

I don't think it's part of the trigger kit - could it still be stuck in the frame? I have disassembled my M&P22 several times, but have never noticed a washer under the hammer spring.

Nope nothing there. I had everything laid out perfectly, and I'd have noticed if it fell out since it's not under any tension or anything. My M&P 22 simply has no washer under that spring.

Oh well...

That video really was super helpful. You were dead on - that safety spring I'd never have figured out by myself, or to get the hammer to be upright. The assembly slipped right back into the frame this way.

So! I got it put back together. Thank you guys for all the help. I'll try not to worry about a washer that may/may not have come in my M&P .22 from the factory. :p:(:o

I tested it with some snap caps and it seems to function perfectly. Just wish it had been a tad easier to do the whole process. Guess I'm not cut out to be a gunsmith after all. :D

It may have been a trying experience, but think of what you have learned.....
4r5

I learned many things:

1.) When the Internet says that it takes less than 5 minutes to do something, it invariably takes either less than 5 minutes, more than 2 hours, or you'll break it completely. Caveat emptor.

2.) When in need, the Internet is also remarkable at finding solutions for you.

3.) S&W should be ashamed of the safety system on the M&P .22. If you have big hands, avoid this pistol unless you do this modification.

4.) My range/gunsmith said they'd have done the safety removal for me for $40. I'm glad I saved the $40 (eventually!)

Thanks again, mkbruce, and everyone else who offered help. I'm looking forward to shooting it again soon (only got it yesterday!).
