the # on butt appear to be g480961 g could possibly be a c

my wife Grandfather was a king county's sheriff and a Seattle police officer in th e late 50s early 60s building a display case but would like more info on this thanks

Welcome aboard!
It looks like you have a Model 10 (.38 Special Military & Police Revolver) from the early1960’s. You didn’t show enough of the gun to tell if it has a standard or heavy barrel. The model will be stamped in the frame cut for the yoke and I’m guessing it’s either marked 10-2 (standard weight barrel) or a 10-3 (heavy barrel).

The serial number prefix is a “C”.

To add to what Chad told you, Model 10, numbered C488555 with a 4” barrel, shipped in February, 1961.

awesome thanks so much it definitely appears to be standard barrel, its a pretty thin wall compared to any of my modern pistols
