We need to know if it's a five or six shot .38 Special. Make sure you got the serial number off the butt and included any letter prefixes.

it's a six shot, yes the ser # is from the butt

Looks like you have a pre-War Military and Police model. This was S&W's bread-and-butter model for the Law Enforcement community for decades.
