I have a 6 shot 38S&W five screw gun, 2" bbl, wood grips w/diamond, two dowel pins, blued finish, serial # C56713. Does the C indicate 1948 DOB or later, and what is the correct model number of this gun - M&P, 10? I wish I was smarter!

That SN would date its shipment at around late 1949. Collectors would call it a pre-Model 10 M&P, but S&W called it simply a M&P.

The only way to get smarter about S&W is to study, read and learn. When I joined this forum, I thought knew a bit about S&W revolvers. It didn't take me long to realize I knew very little.

I know a bunch more now, but there are members here that make me look like a kindergarten toddler.

Couple of questions. Can you check the right side of the barrel and report on the caliber? If a 1948 gun with a C prefix serial number, it would have to be a 38 Special, not S&W caliber. Second, check the serial number closely to make sure there are not 6 numbers, since there was a C56,XXX and a C56X,XXX. Photos would help.
