Hi There,

Welcome to our Group!

You have a S&W .44 DA (Double Action) First Model. It is mis-
sing the trigger guard and probably the trigger spring. These
were made starting around 1881 and were sold from stock up
to about 1913. All the frames were made prior to 1899 so it is
considered an antique under Federal Law.

S&W back then used numbers to describe frame sizes. The .44
size was called the Number 3 (.22's were No. 1's, .32's were No.
1-1/2, .38's were No.2's (except the Civil War vintage ones)).

It looks like it needs some TLC.

Cheers!
Webb

Thanks so much for the info. It was recently found in a Louisiana bayou. I was magnet fishing!

Part it out to the Forum

That's certainly one option, although I'm wondering how the insides might have fared better than the outside------seems unlikely somehow, more's the pity!

Another option, albeit unlikely to be successful, would be to track down the cretin who threw it where he threw it, and stake him out at the same site. At that point you could just wait for nature to take its course---or perhaps speed it some by slathering him with honey to make him more attractive to the sundry bayou critters who might be passing by.

Even better, so as to be compensated for your time and effort, might be to set up some lawn chairs, and charge admission for folks who might like to sit and watch Mother Nature at her very best!

That'd likely pay better than parting it out.
