Help Identifying Please

This was an auction gun that I've been informed I won for $320 . Will pick up tomorrow so have not seen in person yet but was hoping folks here could help identify the model. It is pinned and also marked SCPD so it had a service career somewhere. I've seen these with the additional piece on the inside of the grip but never understood the need or if these were factory options or standard on some models . At first glance it looks loke a model 10 something or a close cousin. I love the older smiths and have several in 38 & 357 along with several 3rd gen semis, so didn't mind entering a modest bid, but honestly didn't expect to win. Auctions as you all know are generally terrible places to buy. Any help appreciated

A .38 Combat Masterpiece, probably a Model 15-2, maybe an early 15-3. What is the serial number?

The Pachmayr grip adaptor is an add-on.

possible it’s a Suffolk County Police Dept gun. I’ve got one a bit worse for wear. For some reason they seem to have a lot of guns show up on used market. One of those weird County PDs.

A few California PD's come to mind, such as Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, & San Clemente.

The grip insert makes it much easier to hold onto for folks with large hands. Filling that gap makes it much more ergonomical.

$320 for a Model 15 Combat Masterpiece is a steal. You have done well Sir!

I too, have a SCPD marked Model 15. Given the Masterpiece’s popularity in California, I assumed it to be one of these. Every confirmed Suffolk County revolver that I’ve seen was a Model 10. One day, maybe, I’ll get it lettered. You got an excellent deal on yours at that price.

Shows as 15-2. Thanks again to all for the information and feedback. Wondering if any of you gurus can date it by the number in the pics It was a local auction house with inventory from largely a single collector. Picked it up Friday and gave it a quick look and finish wear as a former duty gun but no rust or pitting, timing and lock up are excellent. Removed the grip adapter as I don't prefer them. Grips are numbered to the gun as attached shows which is always nice to find. I love shooter grade guns as I have a hard time owning safe queens. My first model 15, to go along with a handful of other classis smiths - and yes all acquired at very low prices. Anxious to give this a thorough cleaning and then a trip to the range. I have to go shoot it . Revolvers are so much fun.

With that serial number, it is probably from 1963. As I mentioned in Post #4, it was almost sure to be a dash 2. Quite nice. The price was ridiculously low. Good for you!

The Combat Masterpiece is a fine piece of equipment.

Here is the Model 15-2 I got from my dad before he passed away. The stocks on it are not original. They are GA targets that originally shipped on a Model 19-2. I do have the original Magna stocks and the box for this unit.
