I'm attempting to identify a particular weapon: .357 S&W Highway Patrolman, 6 inch, blue. I sold the weapon long ago, but still have the original wooden grips (which have the mental S&W tag imbedded) which bear the serial number 325346 stamped inside along with large Letters "N R". There's some confusion whether the original was a Model 27, 28 or 29. I believe it was a Model 28 and wish to purchase another. I was hoping you might be able to identify the original weapon armed with the serial number on the grips or via the description. Thanks for any help you can provide. This is what it looked like.Model 28 Highway Patrolman.jpg

Welcome to the forum. Yes a Model 28. If you do a little seaching on the forum under S&W Revolvers1961-1980 there is a bunch of info for you.

Thank you very much. I thought it was a 28 - am just about to do the searching you recommended. However, one more thing: Is the serial number on the grip of any relevance - other than perhaps to identify the grips?

Again, do a little seaching and you will find the answer. I have owned Smiths for 25ish years. It is only since I became a member of this forum that I have learned so much. There is a wealth of info here. From what I've picked up. The S/N is on the inside of one of the grip panels written in pencil and other methods that do number to the gun's S/N. I doubt that many of my fire arms do so, in that dad was a shooter and swapped grips around. Again, welcome aboard, this is a great group.

Welcome to the Forum!

The only relevance of the serial number on your right hand grip panel was to keep them with the original gun when it was assembled. They were "fitted" to that frame.
They are "Magna" stocks and will fit any N frame square butt revolver.

Jim - re putting grips and gun together

Sold gun long ago when I went from uniform to plain clothes. No recollection to whom; perhaps traded with a dealer for a better plain clothes gun. I'm going to keep looking re the serial number, but perhaps you already know the answer. Is the number on one of the wooden grips a SN and is there a place here or on the net to trace the owner with the SN?
