Help me out, 586-1

Hi guys. I have tried this before but I didnt come up with much. I have a 586-1 that is satin / chrome plated / something. There are no notes or box to help me with the specs. It does not appear in any way to be an after market job. I am looking for help from professionals like you guys here.

From the lighting in your pictures, I can't tell if it has the frosted look of hard chrome or yellow hue of matte e nickel. Looks more like natural stainless. I wonder if it was misstamped? I can tell you the "M" denotes it's been back to factory for the firing pin bushing recall. If it was plated, it was likely done after the recall work.

This revolver could be ordered in Nickel until 1992. Yours is probably dated to 87 and looks like matte-nickel to me.

Usually, there is an N on the cylinder and on the grip frame, but I am no expert. One other thing, my nickel 586 has a blued trigger and hammer.

I dont have alot of experience with the nickel versions but I was under the impression that they were marked.

This doesn't look like nickel at all to me. I suggest it is one of the chrome alloy finishes. The plated hammer and trigger gives it away. Should be a great, nearly indestructible shooter.

Since you have the box tell us the product code. That will describe how it was when it left the factory. If it's some rare variation, the pc will tell us that. If it's a plain Jane, we'll know it's aftermarket.

I don't have the original box unfortunately. I wish I did, that would help a lot as you stated.

I am interested in what it is. I have not seen anything like it from the factory. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but I am curious. Did you look for the stampings on the cylinder and frame ? If so, what did you see ? I can't see why someone would do an after market satin finish when they could just buy a 686.

Satin nickel was not an option from the factory. Looks Armoloy finish.

I don't recall any matte nickel Smiths, at least 586s from that era. My buddy had a factory 2.5" 586-1, but it was bright nickel. As others have mentioned, factory nickel guns have color case hardened triggers and hammers.

Peak53 nailed it. It does appear from the pictures that the hammer and trigger are plated, and S&W didn't do that on nickel guns.

Probably Armoloy as pointed out, a great finish, much tougher than nickel.

All other remarks notwithstanding, the large block N shown in the grip frame pictures you posted shows the gun came from the factory as Nickel plated.

It is possible that the hammer and trigger were swapped out. As stated by Alk8944 it is stamped on the frame with a "N". So it was likely nickel from S&W. Not saying it wasnt refinished but it should have originally been Nickel.

I agree that it was likely refinished. Not sure how you get matte nickel from a bright nickel finish or get a matching matte hammer and trigger. I am with the Metaloy/hard chrome theory. Matte nickel has a pronounced yellow hue, like this RIA 1911.

Nice, it looks like a Model 10-6 I got from a retired Police Officer who got it from his dad who carried it in the 70s. Hard Chrome finish looks good and wears well.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the only "M" that I see is the one immediately preceding the model number. The M in this case is the abbreviation for "model". If I'm correct then this 586 hasn't had the FP recall.

My vote is for an aftermarket hard chrome finish.
