Just got my first 586. It's a no dash 6" in 99.9% nickel. This will be shot very little and looked at very lot. I don't know too much about revolvers yet. Been searching old threads without much success.

I think I like the looks of traditional rosewood grips with silver medallions and a diamond in the middle. Magnas are too small (I've tried shooting with them.)

Should I be looking for K frame grips and can anyone point me in the right direction? $200 or less is the budget.

Open to ANY suggestions of another type of material and photos would help. Thanks everyone!!!

I would suggest a serial # search and get what is closest to original IMHO.If not, there are a lot of custom type grip makers out there.
Ahrends S&W, K/L Frame, SQ Butt, Cocobolo - FINGER GROOVE - Top Gun Supply
S&W K frame Pistol Grip with Aged Ivory Micarta - Custom Pistol Grips and Kits - CollinsCraftGrips

These factory combat stocks for the square butt 586 are very comfortable for me. The were purchased on Ebay for half of your grip budget. Good luck in your search. Bob

First, shoot the gun, second shoot the gun and if you missed the first two number three, shoot the gun. As long as you clean it, the finish and value will be almost as good as if you just put it in a safe. At the end of the day many years from now lets suppose the net difference in value between a mint/box perfect gun and one that has had several thousand rounds down the barrel is 500....is that money going to profoundly improve your life and its quality? The enjoyment that one gets from shooting and introducing others into shooting is very hard to put a dollar amount on but I will say that its vastly greater then keeping one in pristine condition in hopes that it becomes a highly sought after collector...

I am a big fan of stag grips. These are from Grashorn's Gunworks (Executioner). You can vary the amount of bark (the brown) that you want in them. These on my 27-2 have no bark.

For wood grips, Ahrends makes a whole bunch of different grips in various woods. I just ordered a pair of Maple. Here is a set on my Smith 57.

Hi,

This will give you a good idea of what a set of Patrick's (Grashorn) American Elk stags look on a nickel plated, round butt K-frame. Add a Tyler T-grip and it will be very comfortable for you!

I've always loved how white looks great on Nickel guns. I'd go with Ivory, bonded Ivory, stag or bone that's pure white. Here's a Model 40 I put Ivory polymer on to show the contrast.

I just ordered bonded ivory k frame magna's from Altimont BUT... I want to second what was said about Ahrends. I'm waiting to order a round to square but conversion tactical grip in maple with the tung oil. And of course I will tie up more bandwidth with pictures when I get them.
