So a bit longwinded but I would like to give a bit of backstory first so I apologize in advance; I'm 27 now, and up until February of this year I had never shot a handgun, but had grown up with some farm land where I enjoyed rifles and especially shotguns. I had been out of shooting all together since my late teens when a couple buddies talked me into going to a local indoor range with them to shoot pistols. Immediately I was hooked and a couple weeks later bought my own first pistol, the SR22. Originally I bought it as a range toy and had 0 interest in carrying. But then I took it with me in the car for a craigslist sale in a shady part of town. From that moment on it was a constant companion in my car and I became increasingly interested in getting my cc license, and took the class back in August. Since that time ive been handling /researching /shooting so many guns it gives me a headache, but I do finally feel that I have outgrown my little sr and have learned quite a bit with it, and have become quite the handgun shooter along the way.

Anyway, my friends and the Internet had me all convinced to go Glock, and although they never felt quite 'right' to me in hand I nearly purchased one. Thank God I didn't. This past weekend I shot my friends 27 and 19. I actually shot very well with them, but I still disliked the feel of the grip in hand. My friends kept telling me I would get used to it; I don't want to get used to a gun, I want it to fit.

Then another friend showed up with his brand new 9mm Shield, and I fell in LOVE. I had noticed them, read about them but never really paid attention since they were so hard to find. My second mag ever through the gun was about a 2" group all at the bullseye at 7 yards. And it felt amazing in hand. More so then any other gun ive handled, this felt perfect and I shot very well with it and only expect to get better.

Now the huge downside, I still cant find one anywhere. I called around and did find one in stock locally but it was a) in .40 and b) had a nasty markup. I would really, really prefer to have it in 9mm, but if I can find one in .40 at a decent price I would probably jump. How snappy are they in .40? I'm not adverse to recoil as a shotgunner but I also don't want something that's miserable to shoot. Someone also told me the. 40 isn't as reliable; truth to that? I am aware of the mag drop issue.

I would appreciate help you can provide or opinions on being patient for the 9 or leaping on a .40.

I absolutely love my Shield in 40.

IMHO it is very tame in recoil.

The Shield in 40 also gives you the option of also shooting
A 9 as well with a 9mm barrel.

The difference between the 9mm and the 40 cal ballistics performance
Isnt as large as it used to be, but the 40 DOES do more damage than a 9mm.

Take a deep breath and just wait for the 9. Greatest thing since sliced bread. Plus u don't have to worry about mag drop issues like the 40. Sorry, I couldn't help but throw that in : )

Great to hear! No issues with yours? Round count?

Ive read quite a bit on ballistics in handguns in general so ive seen that modern 9mm +Ps aren't far behind the 40. To me everythings a big step up from the .22.

Ive shot quite a few .40s now, and supposedly heard the Glock 27 was snappy. It was but it wasn't unmanageable to me. If anything I think the Shields slimmer grip would allow me better control over the fatty Glock as well.

As far as finding one, you just have to be patient and check often. I fell into one a few weeks back when I walked into a LGS and they had one 9mm in the case. Better yet, it was for sale and I jumped on the deal. About the only time it's not by my side is when I take a shower. I found the N82 iwb holster very comfortable, even with shirts and a T shirt.

Mag drop issues, LMAO. Sorry but not all of the Shield .40 suffer from a mag drop issue. There are several of us with over 2K rounds through ours that have never dropped a mag.

I know. I was just giving the OP a reason to get the 9mm. You can tell from his post that it's what he REALLY wants. Just having fun.

I cancelled my order today, so it may open a slot

I had a 9mm on order since July 25th. I got my deposit back today (Dec 10th)and cancelled the order. I used a gun shop that I had never used before and they were unable to get one for me. Too many excuses. Good luck finding one in stock. Try major retailers as it is a volume game with this hard to get pistol.

I am fairly new to handguns as well. When I initially got the inclination to cc, I was dead set on a Glock 26. I did research for months and in that time I came across the Shield. Not too long after, I got to hold one at a local gun show in 9mm and .40... That was it. Although I didn't buy either one (what was I thinking:confused:) I was fortunate enough to see a 9mm Shield in a LGS a week later. Needless to say, I didn't let it pass. I paid $459 plus tax and DO NOT regret it one bit. It may be a premium price, but the Shield is a premium quality handgun. I have a little over 250 rounds through mine with out a single problem and there is never a time when it isn't on my hip. I even have two friends who I let shoot it, and now they're in the hunt for one! Don't give up looking; check and check often with your LGS and the big box retailers and when you see one DO NOT let it pass!

How long have they been out? Since April? I just paid for mine yesterday, $335 at Bud's, it is being shipped now (I hope!).

In the mean time I have picked up 3 third gens and a j-frame. They satisfied the urge for a new gun while I waited. ;)

I guess I'll see if the Shield is worth the money. I've never seen one in person, never held one.

I would have went with the Glock. 1) I wouldnt have to wait to defend myself in the mean time.

2) it is a reliable firearm (minus the 4th gen hiccup)

3) if you are new to guns i wouldnt go with "what feels good". I would go with a proven and readily available firearm. You dont know, your grip might be wrong or the short grip might be less comfortable then a longer grip. And also the biggest piece of dog poopoo of a handgun might be the most pleasant and comfortable to hold.

Not knocking the Shield just stating my opinion

All I can say is I really like my 9mm Shield. Mine is an early model, got it in April (I got very lucky). Good luck on your search for one, it can be hard depending on where you live, so it seems.

I use to be a Glock (Block) guy, when I first got into guns. You know, because all the cool kids on the block had one, lol. I kept my last one until recently when I purchased my Shields. After shooting my Shields, i realized how much I hated my Glock. Long story short......My Shields made me retire my Glock and here recently I sold the Glock to fund my new AR build. And I can honestly say, a Glock for an AR is well worth the trade, IMO.

Gunbroker.com has a Shield 9mm current bid $530 with 58 minutes.

You are young. If you are not married go for it.

Just purchased a 9mm shield. Fantastic pistol. Also was distracted by wait time and was leaning to purchasing a glock. Glad I didn't buy one. Shield is worth the wait.

Not sure where u are located, but Shoot Straight in West Palm had a NIB Shield 9 in the case for $449. As far as the Glock comment, that little Gen 4 issue (and late model Gen 3) is a BIG problem. My personal experience with Glock (after three recent purchases) is what drew me to M&P in the first place. Honestly, I still have a place in my heart for Glock ( and an unused Blue Label GSSF certificate) but until they admit and correct I simply cannot put any more money into one.

I just buy the old ones. As for hatting them, im no fan boy and own Smiths as well as German guns but a bug gun is just that, a bug gun. Its small and low on ammo capacity.

Btw M&Ps have also had plenty of issues with barrels. And had the OP said "I tried an HK and a Shield" my answer would be the same. It just so happens that he said Glock.
