Hi all, been lurking for a while and have a some questions on a 1917 I have (or rather my dad has) so I'd thought I'd check w/ the experts. Don't have picture capability here and don't have my S&W book handy. I've looked at threads about the 1917s but haven't seen one like this and am wondering what I have:

Stocks -Diamond magnas, black washer, no number.

Butt - Serial 940XX on the butt in 2 lines with a star below. Looks as though the US Property was sanded off as only the "OD" in MODEL is left. The 1917 marking is still there. Has lanyard loop. Under the grips are stampings of 4.49, a diamond, and 14.

Frame - Right side has large S&W logo, but no "Made in USA, etc." at the front of frame. Left side has flaming bomb at top and eagle behind trigger guard, but this as been partially worn/sanded off. Under the yoke is an eagle w/ S26 under it. Can't make out the last digit so may not be a 6. Has another 5 digit number that matches the number on the yoke.

Cylinder - Stamped w/ serial number.

Barrel - No US Property marking under the barrel. Under the ejector rod is an eagle and diamond. Also the serial number is stamped here but looks to be stamped over some other numbers. S&W D.A. 45 on left side and address markings on top.

I think this is a refinish based on the partially worn markings, minimal cylinder drag marks and the finish is sort of a semi gloss/matte deal. Not the usual shiny blue finish, but not a matte job either. They seem to have done a pretty good job - I can't tell that the marking under the barrel was removed. Was the "US Property" marking on there at all?

I though there was no S&W trademark stamp on these? Why is there one on this one? Bore is in great shape, cylinder locks up great. I'd like to know what the approximate value is so I can either leave in current condition, or put some wear on it as a shooter. Just wanted to check to see if there was something unusual about it.

Thanks and have a good Thanksgiving everybody.

The 4.49 is a factory service department stamp indicating it was worked on in April of '49 (probably for a refinish). It's possible that the post-war grips were added then. Barrel might have also been replaced then too(hence the lack of US Property stamp).
Sometimes the S&W trademark was added by the service department. Does the serial number inside the sideplate match?

With all of the replaced parts and a refinish, you aren't going to hurt it one bit by shooting and enjoying it. I bet it's a great shooter!
