Help please on value

Hope this is a proper question for this section.

My 85 year old brother has Alzheimer and his wife and son both hate guns. This S&W 36 ser.#AVF8944 Mdl. 36 no dash was given to a neighbor to hold while they decided what to do with it. My wife and I just got home from a visit there and brought the gun home with us. The neighbor and his son ask what we wanted for it and on the spur of the moment I had no idea of value. These aren't the best of pictures but maybe someone here can give a value range. I could keep it but really want to help them sell it to their neighbor (an Ex Marine).

I know my brother has no carry license and bought the gun new. The bore and cylinder chambers are clean and bright, there is the slightest of turn ring on the cylinder. There is no evidence of wear in the finish.

On MY table here in FAR western Kentucky that would be priced $450 - $500.
I know a couple of traders that would probably ask $650.

It's a beautiful revolver, don't take less than $400 for it.

Beautiful looking example. $400-$500 if it is as nice as it looks. A little less if you are wanting to give them a good deal.

Why so extreme???

I see a VERY large range in price for these. GB has sold them from about $450 to $700. MSRP for a new one is about $750 (gulp)

The box was found in another box full of shooting stuff....holsters, ammo, a Beretta 21A, and a drafting set of instruments (he was a Engineer). Maybe these pics will help. The ser.# does not appear on the yoke area. Slight turn ring. A box of .38 spec. with five rounds missing.

5 missing rounds and a sticker still on the stocks. Maybe meaning it only ever fired 5 rounds? I wonder ...

Very nice gun and will make a nice addition to somebodies collection.

I'd say if it was in good enough condition to say only 5 rounds have been through it ( it looks like it is to me ), and you have all the papers and tools, it might be worth the higher end of what the guys are telling you for value. I wouldn't let it go under $500 as a complete package.

Thanks for all the help. If the neighbor doesn't want it after a year has passed I'll see if I can sell it locally. What little experience I have in selling guns on local sites shows just how many "wolves" hang around with low offers. I might have to just keep it.
