HELP PLEASE! Rem Improved Mod 6

Have you ever taken apart a gun and can't get it back together?
I did! Please someone on here help me put it back together. It's my old trusty favorite .22, a Remington Improved No6. The falling breach would not go down far enough to load a cartridge any more so I punched the pin out and removed the falling breach, and cleaned it good. I can't get it back together now the spring tension is murder. Does anyone know a trick, other then taking to a gunsmith. Please someone, I'm begging you!

Thanks but no. I found that also. I know how it goes together, I think I know anyhow, I just can't get it to fit. I been trying all day too. Every finger I have is bleeding, I have a headache and my eyes hurt.

Sometimes you just need to let it rest overnight.

I'm no mechanic, but have had similar problems with farm equipment or my tractor, and will often wake up in the middle of the night with an idea that works the next day.

Also check the hole where the spring "pin" goes.

Assemble the breech with the hammer in the half cock notch only.

The breech block can only be opened to the full down position with the hammer in the 'safety' notch (half cock).

With hammer @ full cock,,the breech can be opened about half way,,like you descibe.

Make sure the extractor is in position, slides freely and that tiny coil spring is in place that keeps upward tension on it.

The front (muzzle) end tip of the extractor is shaped so as to slide over a section of the frame when the rifle is assembled. Sometimes that small piece of the extractor becomes bent downwards and won't allow the breech to pivot down when assembled.

I can't think of any other tricks to the #6Improved. Pretty simple rifle.

Thanks to all and anyone who helps. I will try again tomorrow because my fingers, hands and arms hurt too badly right now from attempting to put this back together today. I want to pick it up right now and try again but my better judgement is telling me to try again on another day. I did try it a 1/2 cock but the spring tension is brutal. I just can't get the spring between the hammer and the breach block to put the pin back into the frame.

Use a vise to pull the parts together under spring pressure. A clamp will do also if a vise isn't available.
Study the parts a bit and cut some soft wood jaws to conform to the bottom of the frame and one for the breech block so nothing is damaged in the squeeze, especially the extractor.
3/4" pine works good.

With the right angle you can push the parts together with no effort other than closing the vise. Any small misallignment of the holes in the block and the frame can be overcome with an undersize punch (nail) to line things up. Then walk the pin into place as it pushes the punch back out.

You might also find it easier to take the hammer, trigger & trigger guard out.
Then replace the breech block and pin into place. It won't be under any spring tension now.
Then place the mainspring w/ follower in place with the hammer into the frame.
With the frame in a vise, you should be able to lever the hammer into position for it's pivot screw using a couple of gunsmiths friends (screwdrivers).
One from the top opening,,one from the bottom where the trigger is removed.
Levering carefully back against the frame won't damage anything and you're just pushing the hammer forward against the spring tension to line up the holes.
Use the small dia punch to slip thru when the holes are close to lining up. Then secure with the pivot screw (pin?) in the same manner as above.

Save those fingers for trigger pullin' and loadin'

Day two and I quit! I tried the 1/2 cock method, the vise, clamps, screw drivers, zip ties to help hold, I dropped a frame pin and later one of the spring ends and had to use a magnet to find them, I cursed real bad things and I now just want to cry....This thing is so simple and I can't figure it out. I'm going nuts!

Had a Remington Model 8 puke a part out of the receiver when I had the magazine out once. I put it back in eleventeen different ways, which required complete reassembly to function test. I had to put it away and come back a few days (weeks?) later.

Lesson learned: Don't tackle a John Moses Browning forearms without disassembly knowledge.
