My father just passed down to me his J frame model 36 w/ 3" barrel to me. The gun is in really good condition and I would like to find out the date of manufacture if possible. This is my first Smith and Wesson and I am not knowledgeable on this pistol at all. Any info that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. The serial number is 606768. Thank you in advance for any info that can be provided

The standard catalog a Smith and Wesson fourth addition says 1962 the serial number started with 295000 and then it shows 1969. 786544 so my guess is 1968-1969

Welcome aboard from Wyoming.

Good on your Dad for giving you his revolver.

Here's a nice 1963 square butt and a shabby 1968 round butt (sn 545731). The company changed from the flat latch cylinder release to the standard latch in 1966 and deleted the diamond around the screw escutcheon in 1968. I'm betting yours has neither, making it, as haywood said, a 1968 or '69 model.
