Hello everyone, I am seeking a Nickle Plated M-39 S&W of which I am the original owner. The serial no. is A-302936 . I had loaned this to my father who was living in Phoenix. It "disappeared" after his death. I would very much like to get it back,,, purchase it back. I know that this is one heck of a long-shot, but what better place to try. Any info/help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Dave

It's definitely a long shot but miracles do happen. The gun you seek based on the s/n is actually a Model 39-2 so good luck.

Guns and other valuables disappearing under those circumstances really grinds my gears. What kind of family member or "friend" steals like that? Happened to a buddy when his father passed. A highly unusual Winchester in 32-20 grew some legs before my buddy could get back east and take charge.

I've been accused of it, sort of. Sister-in-law asked me one day if I had ever come across her parents' "other" wedding set that had allegedly been in the possession of my late wife. I had no clue what she was talking about.

Thing is ma-in-law lived in a sheltered apartment place where they had regular visits from the local jewelers, and she fancied herself as a wheeler-dealer in plaid polyester. I recall when ma-in-law passed my wife felt some jewelry was gone, but at the time there were bigger issues with her own health to worry about.

UPDATE

Hello everyone, NEW INFO- If you responded to "Nic Mod 39-2 nic and bl controls" posted by gmborkovic, you may have my "lost" M-39 in your possession. Serial # A-302936 is number 116 on the list. ( two blocks of 50 and 16 more). this was posted approx. 08/09/2021. If you have this one, or know who does, please contact me. Thank you, Dave

Hello Dave, you may want to try a search on Gun Broker of nic. m-39-2s
that either sold or were advertised on their site. I dont know how to do a deep, past search. Mike

Hi Dave, best wishes in your quest. Is it possible that he had a brain cramp and simply sold it without remembering where he got it from? If he had no recollection of you loaning it to him, he wouldn't have any reason to mention its sale to you.

How much time had gone by between his passing and the SN being posted here on 08/09/2021? If stolen, it's pretty unlikely the thief would provide that info here so it may have changed hands (legitimately) before that. I've encountered so many decent, helpful folks here on this Forum that I hate to think of any member obtaining a firearm that way.

We're all pulling for a happy ending for you - please keep us posted.

Todd

still looking..

Somewhere out there is a person, unknown, who posts on S&W Forum, who is in possession of this M39-2..... maybe they will see this.....

Only to be expected. In the stampede to convert everything dad had to cash and spend it, families seldom slow down to figure out who anything belongs to.

Dave,
That's not the case. Re-read this reply by gmborkovic. He maintains that thread and the data was from a listing that he saw on GunBroker. Unfortunately, GB doesn't keep auction records that far back. It looks like auction pages are only available for 3 months after they close.

When my mother died and was lying in the hospital room, my sister requested some "private time" with my mom's body.

My mother suddenly had no wedding ring and was buried without it. She never took it off even after my father had died 22 years prior. Then my father's Hamilton watch disappeared and my mother's sterling silver set.

I have very little use for "family".

Just maybe..... can't hurt to try....

There is actually a way to find that closed Gunbroker auction, but it requires what is called "The Wayback machine" which basically archives every page of the internet that the spider has crawled.

I did a cursory search, but it is not very user friendly, but the data is probably in there somewhere....It's just having the correct date and search term and then hope that the search bot has archived that page.

Here's Gunbroker's wayback page if you to pour a stiff drink and give it a whirl... You can search by date and then time within that day when the bot crawled and archived the page:
