Hello I'm new here and would like help to find out the age and manufacturing date of a old S&W 38 special that I bought. There is no model number on it anyplace
First, Welcome aboard. Looks like you got a 38 M&P (pre model 10) from around late 1954 or early 1955. Would you mind posting a few more pictures? Some of the great members could give you just about any info you'd desire.
It is a .38 Military & Police from the time frame mentioned. After 1957 a very similar gun was named the model 10, therefore the collector types call this a "pre-model".
The closest SN I have on my list is C336xxx which shipped from the factory in 12/55. And in collector terminology, it's a pre-Model 10 M&P. That simply means that it's the same M&P revolver which was given the new Model 10 name in 1957. I am not sure yours has the rounded butt. It does have the so-called PC (plain clothes) stocks.
Virtually any M&P which is reasonably original, in good operating condition, and is not too ugly will trade at $250-$300. I'd say $200 is not a bad price. You didn't get hurt.
