I have a line on a "like new" pre-lock 4" barrel 686 .357 w/the square butt wooden handles for $525. I own a LNIB 3" S&W 63-5 .22lr revolver. I also own a 4" GP100. My dilemma is would you sell the 63-5 to purchase the 686 given I really don't need the 686 but it's sooo nice looking! I'm not emotionally attached the 63-5 but it is a nice plinker. Do you think it a wise trade out?

+2 - I had a GP100 until I bought a 686 and a 681. They are redundant.

Most any .22 revolver is worth holding onto - fun and inexpensive to shoot (when we finally start buying ammo at a reasonable price again).

I know this is a S&W site but let's not underestimate the Ruger. I have S&W revolvers; a blued & a nickled models 40-1 (lemon squeezers), a model 042, and a 63-5. All are beautiful and great shooters. I liken the SW's to luxury cars and the Rugers as the Ford F-150 series...They both fill a niche better than the rest. The S&W CANNOT handle the 180gr hunting rounds...I repeat, just CAN'T without causing problems in the cylinder. The Cylinders will need work after a range trip of shooting those. That is not the case with the Rugers. Sorry but true and won't argue it.

If the 686 is clean $525 is a very good price in August of 2013. I picked up a 686-5 with 4" barrel a year or so ago for $600 in as new condition, and I was very happy with the deal.

Being a Square Butt 686, it is pre lock, and forged parts. Both make it desirable. A new 686-6 is over $700 new. I would take the one you have located ahead of a new one if that tells you anything.

NEXT Do not get rid of a Smith & Wesson 22 Revolver, you will regreat it for Life, and maby Forever.

My advice for what it is worth. You can replace a GP100. My preference would be keep what you have and just buy the 686. However if you have to move one to buy it, the GP100 is replaceable.

Help

I have a model 686-63. Why does it say -63 and not -6? It's a686 plus Talo deluxe.

If it is clean and it is pre lock / MIM parts.... 525 is a good price.
