help with 28-2

just bought one ..... the Blue Book it has a 28-2 Dull finish listed.....it looks like cerakote but the seller swore it was a factory finish..I mean this is a very dull finish.....does the info i was given sound correct I do not have a blue book

Sorry to say but no that is not a factory finish.
A dead giveaway are both the hammer and trigger would be case hardened.
this is a typical 28-2 to give an example

Also it is wearing round butt grips. Have you removed them to see what the frame looks like? Possibly modified by a prior owner to make it "theirs"-not an unheard of practice.

That would also explain a refinish. At $300 if it's a good shooter you did very well!

yep the the grips dont fit right, but at the price i paid i can get some that fit, now to find out if its cerakote or just a dull bluing job ...what would you guess.........any way to tell

Michael,gotta second what weatherby said.You got a good deal at that price and if mechanically sound you have a shooter that will outlast you.

That finish looks more of a spray than a Cerakote finish. It may have been spray painted.

wouldnt nail polish remover or alcohol remove paint....i tried my best to rub some off and couldnt.....does it appear frame has been altered..thanks again

Yes, somebody modified it to round butt configuration.

If it were my gun, since it has already been modified, I would get the barrel cut back to 3-1/2", or 3-1/4", or as short as I could and yet keep the full length of the ejector rod. Then I would polish (starting with 320 grit paper and stopping with 1000 grit backed by rubber or wooden sanding blocks- don't use a powered buffer) and re-blue it myself (yes you CAN do it yourself, using hot blue from Brownells and a tank made from an old USGI ammo can, and a propane grill as a heat source). Then I would get a nice set of Ahrends wooden round butt N frame grips of one type or another, and have myself a first class revolver.

A close up of my M28-2. This is what it should look like. It's flat, blue-black, but not dull. Notice you can't see any reflections, unlike a polished blue Smith.

I'd say leave it like it is..shoot it and enjoy it. At some point if you want a project, do what you like with it. If it's Cerakoted,it should last through use quite well.
