Help with a new grip?

The link I provided doesn't appear to be round but says it fits a 627. Would the grip in the link work with my pistol?

No. As stated prior, yours is a round butt N frame. The link you posted is for a square butt N frame. You need to find one either for round butt or round to square butt conversion. It may be easier to find by going to Hogue's website to find the correct ones.

Welcome to S&Ws, Jed.

In this case, I believe the Midway listing is incorrect, as the 627 was only sold with a round butt. They screw up a lot. But it's easy to screw this sort of stuff up on such a big inventory.

Smith and Wesson have made a lot of their models for a very long time, updating most models at least half a dozen times. This includes frame shape.

Take, for instance, the Model 19. It was introduced in 1957. An update in 1959 changed the extractor rod, and models with that change were referred to as "19-1". Today, collectors would describe the original 1957-1958 Model 19s as "19-no dash".

Fast forward to 1995, and the Model 19-7, when they changed the Model 19 from a square butt to a round butt. And to make matters super-fun, the change to a round butt didn't even warrant a new dash#! So you have 1994 Model 19-7s that are square butt, and 1995-96 19-7s that are round butt!

I'm not super-up on the Model 627, but the blued Model 27 was originally made in 1935 (327 is Scandium), and so it came with a square butt. Hence, I don't know if the 627 was ever sold as a square. I don't think so. Also note that it's not as if Smith changed all their revolvers from round to square in a particular year, so no dice there.

So how do you buy grips?

It's actually pretty easy. Just FFL your gun to me and I'll take a look! :D

On your left is a square butt. On your right is a round.

It gets a little harder to see with a J-frame (the smallest modern S&W revolver), but the overall shape is the same. The round butt gets narrower at the very bottom, whereas the square-frame gets wider. Alternatively, the angle of the bottom-rear corner of a square-butt is acute, whereas the bottom-rear corner of a round butt is obtuse.

PS -- $127 is a buttload of money for grips. For less, you can order something from Mr Kim Ahrends.

Some of his stuff is also sold through "DJGripseller" on eBay. I've personally dealt with neither of them, but haven't heard bad stuff, either.

Welcome to the FORUM! Once you have determined if it is round butt, or square (should be round) Hogue has round to square conversion stocks. Other companies have them also. My 686-6 Pro is an L frame but the principal is the same. The stocks are similar to the one you posted. They were VERY tight on my gun. Feel great to me though. Good luck on your quest! Bob

No, these grips are for a square butt revolver , yours is a round butt.
Check Hogue's website for the correct grips.
Another maker to look at is Ahrends Grips. He makes round butt, square butt and round to square butt conversion grips. Nice exotic woods of your choice and very resonable prices.
My avatar model 58 has Ahrends Retro Combat in cocobolo.

I just purchased a Hogue Round to Square conversion grip, finger groove combat, for my 617-6 (Round butt). Fits just fine. If you are in doubt, just remove the current grips and see what your gun is, view the examples above).
