My mother recently gave me a model 36 that she said she purchased in the mid 1960's. It looks unfired, but she thinks she shot it one time when she first got it. It is in the old blue box and is still wrapped in the brown waxed paper it came in . It has the papers and a cleaning rod. The serial # is j76xxx. I know very little about gun values, and would appreciate any help and information anyone could provide.

Yup, 1970. Sounds like you have a really nice piece. I'm not exactly sure on value, though I paid $350 recently for a Model 36 no dash with some wear and no box. If the revolver is in excellent condition as you describe and has original box and paperwork that certainly adds to the value. A Model 36 is an excellent carry conceal piece if you have an interest in that.
If you look at other photos posted on the Forum, you will see many revolvers of the same type as yours with a small pin above where the barrel threads into the frame. This was done up to about 1982.
This one is fine for +P, but at current ammo prices I would practice more with lighter and cheaper loads (130 gr FMJ, 148 gr wadcutters) and occasionally with the serious stuff.
