I have a chance for a stainless steel Model 639 for $400 (Local FTF purchase), but I'm not familiar with this specific model. Per the seller: S&W model 639 9mm in good condition. Comes with the one magazine. Has some scratches but is very clean with a low round count. Serial number A793176

It seems like a good price from the "Buy it nows" online. But, is there anything I should be wary of or specifically check for? I know it originally came with 2 mags and was discontinued in 1988. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello,

My advice: Don't dink around-buy it! $400 is a very good price in the condition you describe. I recently paid $450 for one in excellent condition with two original mags, no box, and felt like I was getting a good deal.

I think $500-$600 is the going rate depending on condition and accessories, a bit more in near mint condition with box, etc.

As for age, I don't have my book handy, but earlier versions had a rounded trigger guard, later versions had a squared trigger guard.

Here's a pic of mine to help get you motivated:

These are really neat guns, with a great-feeling slim grip and perfect balance. Shooting 9mm is a breeze, accuracy is great and it's a S&W auto so reliability is second to none.

Best,

Great, now I want a 639. Thanks a lot heekma! :)

If it says S&W and it's for sale, I check it out and consider purchasing it. From what I have seen locally $400 is very reasonable for a 639. Light marks and scratches in stainless are much easier to repair or just clean up than any other type of finish. And the one thing we know for sure; S&W is not making any more 639's. To find one locally where you don't have to pay tax, FFL fees or shipping on top of an already good price = buy it now.

I recently purchased one from Joe Salter for $475 that's a little used, but still very nice. (Hard to mess up a stainless steel). You don't see them very often. I think they only made them a short time. I prefer the lightweight, now that I have it. It is HEAVY. Mine has the rounded trigger guard.

Thanks for all your replies. Sorry to say, when I call him this AM, I was an hour to late. :(
Man, I hate it when that happens. Usually leads to a day or so of grouchy self-deprecation. That would have been a very good price.
