I appears to be a Victory Model, made for the S&W 38 cartridge. I've not seen a Victory Model with a 6 inch barrel, but wonder if it is a replacement. It has acquired a coat of nickel since it left the factory. I'm not sure if the checkered grips were still being used on Victory models.

It has a 5" barrel, but on the top strap there is nothing to say it is a Victory. I am puzzled.

The "V" prefix clearly ID's the gun as a Victory model. The 5" barrel and caliber refine that to a British Service Revolver (.38/200). The pre-Victory BSRs with checkered walnut grips had the silver medallions. By the time the guns were built with V prefix serial number I beleve they had smooth grips, I could be wrong on that though.

The nickle was done sometime after the war.

Thanks MKT,that clears the question to me.

Those are gold-medallion grips, from the 1910 - 1920 era. They don't fit right-
one of the pictures clearly shows a lot of front gripstrap. The original grips have
been replaced.
