Hello, I just picked up a Mod 36 S/N 60J9X. I have looked in my SCSW and can not find a serial number that looks anything like this one. It has grips numbered to the gun and is a round butt with a ramp front sight. Inside the frame where the yoke closes is MOD 36, on the yoke is stamped 67976 and 2 13. Any help would be appreciated.

Plateshooter, I didn't want your post to go unanswered. I also can't find anything in SCSW that would help. Is there any chance you could post some pictures?

The stamping 60J9x is really weird. Could that be a property or inventory number assigned by an earlier owner?

Pinned barrel, so before 1982. Looks like the barrel is tapered rather than heavy, so before 1975. Assuming those are the original grips, the absence of diamonds would indicate manufacture after 1968.

So the range looks like late '60s to mid '70s, unless I'm wrong about the barrel and the grips are from some other gun.

I'd be interested to hear what the really knowledgeable people have to say about that butt-stamped serial number.

Thanks for the reply David, I "think" this must have been a police gun as it some holster wear, but looks like it has been shot very little. The timing and endshake are fine, and the firing pin bushing shows no evidence of many rounds being fired. I pulled the side plate off to check for rust and to clean and lube the components, and everything looks like new inside. I found it at the shop I do business with while putting one of my guns on consignment there. I got it for $225.00 which I thought was a good price. S&W revolvers seem to be going at a premium in the area I live in, so I snatched this one up while I had the chance. Knowing a little more about it would be a nice bonus.
