Help with identifying?

From the Colt Forum: A guy who either doesn't like Smith and Wesson or thinks he needs to sound like that when he posts on the Colt Forum about S&W asked about this gun. No pictures. I'm not that firm on the large-frame HE's. Here is a cut-and-paste of his post, entirely without permission. Any ideas?

"I have a customer that brought me a (ugggg) Smith and Wesson revolver with a cracked forcing cone. Well, went to look for a model inside the crane area and there was none ! This looks to be a "K" frame with a 2" bbl square butt. Now the interesting part. The serial number is a 87000 range no prefix and has another number under the bbl and on the butt that begins 159xxx any help to model and year of manufacture would be helpful so I can start the hunt for new barrel. Thanks !"

It could be a model 1905 3rd change assuming that the SN does not have a letter prefix that he missed. He already doesn't realize that the SN is not in the yolk cut out for early S&Ws IE the true SN is on the butt on most S&W revolvers. We need to know the caliber to know for sure. Typical Colt guy

I'm fairly sure this guy doesn't know anything about S&Ws. Did he include any pictures? The cracked forcing cone on an early one kinda surprises me.

If this guy is supposed to be a gunsmith and doesn't know where the serial numbers are found, then I would not trust him to remove my barrel! Most likely with a pipe wrench!

you dont use a pipe wrench. You clamp the barrel in the un-padded jaws of a 6" Wilton bench vise. Insert an ax handle thru the cyl. cut out and just spin it off. Sometimes you should remove the barrel pin on top of the rec.
