Help with Mdl 29-2

Hi, all -
This is my first time on this particular forum, since my collection tends more toward C&R milsurp guns. However, the husband of a friend of mine at work recently died and left her with quite a few guns. He was a hunter, and most of the guns are shotguns and rifles, but there are a few handguns in the mix.

One of the guns is a S&W Mdl 29-2 that she wants to sell. She has recieved several what I think are lowball offers from so-called friends at work and so I wanted to get a better idea of what this gun might be worth.

I've attached some photos of the gun itself. After I took the photos, she realized that it also comes with the following:
- original fitted mahogany case w/blue felt lining
- original cleaning tools fitted in case
- original paperwork and booklets

Any ballpark numbers regarding value or advice will be much appreciated!

offer a little more than the other guys

since it has all the goodies probabily 750-800 $ should be honest

original fitted mahogany case w/blue felt lining?? Shouldn't this be a smocked lining? I've personally never heard of a felt lining.

Nice gun! Sounds like a fair price estimate.

Since I like the 6 1/2 inch barrel better, I would probably go $700 or so. You might offer twice here best offer!

Thanks to all for the good advice regarding the value of this 29-2. I'll pass it along to the seller, and I'm sure she won't end up selling it for a "couple hundred", as originally offered!

I agree with kennyb and teesur, and would add a plus to their value assessments.

The 29's, up to and including the 29-2's, are among the most highly publicized and sought after regular production S&W handguns of all time. The 6 1/2" barreled P&R 29's can claim the most interest among that group.

Early N frame guns in fine condition are becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially with the presentation case, tools and literature and that difficulty will only become more acute.

We have only to consider when we find a pristine example of any of these earlier revolvers many will find them superior to new production equivalents, for about 2/3s the price of similar new guns. IMHO, The value of these earlier revolvers will escalate accordingly, eventually exceeding the price of new guns.

I believe "flocked" is the correct term.

Many non-S&W fanatics will refer to the case as "felt lined", when it is in-fact coated with a blue flocking. When I hear this from non-S&W people, I know what they mean. Sometimes a reconditioned case WILL actually be felt lined so you either have to see what you're buying to tell or know the person's "S&W" aptitude who's decribing it.

I have to believe that S&W never intended for these cases to last very long, the inserts are just too fragile and the flocking is always gone. I think it was just a very nice alternative to a cardboard box. But then, didn't they come separately from the gun when new?
