Ok, my face is probably gonna be red on this one.
I bought a new Shield yesterday, and was going to field strip, clean and lube a few minutes ago.
Someone please tell me why the slide will not come forward, off the frame.
With takedown lever rotated, the slide will move forward about 1/8",
but then stops. I mean, a hard stop. Did I miss something??
Thanks,

Don't be red faced

The Shield is a different kind of gun. I had trouble stripping mine and even a harder time putting the slide back on and I have been shooting a long time. Have you pulled back on the slide as far as it will go to lock the slide back? The Shield has a very stout recoil system and the slide goes back further than what you think to get the slide to to lock in place. then you can pull the disassembly lever down and push slide forward and slide should come off. This is, of course, if you remembered to pull down the sear deactivation device. Something is stuck if you did all that and the slide does not come off. I just cleaned a FS M&P40 and Shield 9mm this afternoon.

Affirmative to all the above. I also have been shooting a long time(over half a century!!), and own a lot of autoloaders. Never had this problem before. Thanks to everyone, now HELP!

If you followed all of the steps & it still wont come off it appears there's something wrong that requires repair.

At this point, I would take it to a local range and get a second pair of eyes on it....Sounds like a mechanical issue, not operator.

It does sound like a mechanical problem, but from curiosity, with the sear lever back up in its normal position and the disassembly lever up, does the pistol seem to function normally?

Yes Jim, although I've not fired it, it operates normally as far as trigger, safety, reset, etc.
Just as you fellows did, I concluded last night that it's just some weird
little mechanical glitch. I'm going to email Smith C.S. tonight, for them to read in the morning. Never dealt with them, but assume they'll just send a label for me to send it in. I'll keep you informed.
Thanks,

I might add, I've got a lot of autoloaders, and NONE of them have a recoil spring nearly as stout as the one in this Shield. Add to that, minimal grasping grooves and a little arthritis in my hands, and this little thing is tough.

Take it back to where you bought it and see if they can get it stripped, this should have been done before filling out the papers.

Possibly a hangup at the takedown lever. Recoil spring assembly flat getting caught. Make sure your barrel is fully engaged in the slide.

Play with the takedown lever, wiggle it, don't fully flip it down during disassembly.

You might try pushing down (into the frame) on the back of the slide as you push it forward. I've seen VP9s that require this when new.

I had a hard time getting mine apart also. After several tries I found I had pushed the sear deactivation lever down too far. Lifted it up a hair and all was fine. Hope this helps!

Maybe try leaving the sear deactivation lever up, and just pull the trigger (make sure there's no round in the chamber, obviously). At least that would eliminate one possible cause.

Skipper, I had that happen when I first got the shield. It was the recoil spring not seated properly. Take it apart and reassemble it, being careful to properly seat the spring. That worked fore me a couple years ago.
