Help with two engraved smith's

Hi I have two smith & Wesssons. One is a pre model 10 and a pre k17. They are both fully engraved. Can anyone tell me about the engraving I think they were factory done but not sure. Also I can send better pics by email. One is signed by Vern Wagnoer

Post some better close up photos, if possible, and maybe we can identify the engraver's style. Why do you think they are factory engraved? Vernon G. Wagoner is a WW2 vet and was a watchmaker/engraver who started engraving guns in 1955. He never worked for Smith & Wesson as a factory engraver. He is listed in the book, "American Engravers" by Roger Bleile. He was originally from Ohio but moved to AZ in 1974 and lives ( or lived ) in Mesa, AZ, if he is still alive. A factory historical letter will tell you if the guns are factory engraved. Ed.

Probably not factory done - but from the fuzzy photo, they look to be well done. The 17 looks to have an inlay of a deer on the side or something... I sent you a PM with my email for a few more photos.

If the revolvers have the S&W logo on the side plate or no S&W logo they were not shipped engraved. They were either done outside of S&W or possibly returned for the engraving.

Does that for the most part hold true for all of the pre-numbered models of the 20th century?
