Hey Fella's. I pick up my new MP15-22 in a couple of hours. AWESOME! I had an old SP-1 Colt AR years ago, but it came with the Colt 4x scope on the handle. Any ideas for my new .22 rifle? I'm thinking red dot, but would like a little magnification. Any help would be great. THANKS!

Your budget is a key role in this thread.

I put a Nikon on top of my 15-22. 3-9x40 Warne RAMP mount with a Primary Arms red dot on the 45 degree mount.

If you wanted to run a red dot with magnificaiton, I highly recommending looking at Primary Arms Micro Dot with a flip to side magnifier (long eye relief) model.

If you want to go budget busters, there is a ton of options, I like the Leupold VX-R series of scopes.. but those start out at around the $450 range. But again, it's Leupold so...

Links

Here are some links to some of the stuff I've talked about... maybe this will get you in the right direction.

Primary Arms Multi Reticle - had this on my ar15 for a long time, loved it.

Primary Arms Micro Dot w/ fixed base.. ar riser height - I have micro dot on my 15-22 now as stated above.

Vortex Strikefire in red/green dot... also have red only dot.

Vortex Sparc - but at this price point, I'd choose the Micro Dot from PA over this. Just my .02 though.

All the above listed can be combined with a PA Magnifier on flip to side mount.
This is the 3x magnifier with flip to side mount bundle for $148

Would like to point out that this is the budget friendly line of things. If you don't care about budget then you can get some of these other guys to talk to you about Aimpoints, EoTechs etc.

The variable scope and red dot thread.

The above post is red dot w/ magnifier solution to your question. The other solution is to drop some change on a variable scope with illuminated reticle. Now this gets tricky and I spent a lot of time researching products before I ended up with what I liked on my AR-15 build. I would use my ar15 in a critical situation over the 15-22 so, I spend a little more money on it than I did my .22

However, if this is the route you would like to go, here are some that I resreached out and found to be nice. I'll go from budget friendly, to not so much budget friendly... and if you want higher than that, I'll try to dig some old links up.

I wouldn't consider this scope 'daylight visible'.. I bought one, nothing wrong with it, but it didn't fit my needs, but it may yours.

Burris Fullfield Tac30 (this has a BDC for the .223 / 5.56) so that becomes null on this weapon, but it's a good sight.

Leatherwood CMR

Leupold VX-R

That should be enough to get you on the right track at least. I highly suggest reading and going over reviews for each of the items you're interested in. They all have their purpose in weapons, in my opinion.

In case you're wondering,, on my S&W M&P 15OR (ar15) I run a Burris MTAC 1-4 on a Burris PEPR mount. On my 15-22 I run the Warne RAMP mount, Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 and the Primary Amrs Micro Dot w/ fixed base on the 45 degree mount.

Hope all my rumblings and ramblins help some.

P.S. There is a post with a lot of these reviewed with pictures and writeups to go with them on another forum, that I will not mention or name here, but if you want a link or something, PM me and I'll be glad to help in your search.

Hey all357mag, from a fellow Upstate-er, welcome to the madness! I have personal experience with the Vortex StrikeFire and the Primary Arms M3 red dots. They are both very good optics for the price range. I am currently running the StrikeFire on my 5.56 and the Primary Arms on my 15-22. The StrikeFire came with a small screw on magnifier. So if you are looking for a red dot with some available magnification the Vortex is a modest option. It's not as convenient as a rail mounted magnifier but, it's a decent low priced red dot that comes with a magnification option.

Personally am using the Vortex Strikefire on my 15-22 as well. Attaches easily, zeroes quickly, holds zero. Its turns my rifle, which I loved to begin with, into a magic wand for the destruction of tin cans, clays-on-the-berm, and pelts spinny targets into submission.
