Tiger shark?

The first Hemingway I read was, The Old Man and the Sea, in my aunt's Reader's Digest condensed books. The shark in that was a Mako. First place where I began to learn about sharks.

Yes, Hemingway "fished" for sharks with a machine gun...a Thompson, to be exact...but it wasn't mounted on the boat. Shoot a shark, have a drink or two, nap a while, wake up and shoot another shark with the machine gun. What a life. He was a real sportsman. Great role model for his son, too. He also liked to point the Thompson at people photographing him. What a sense of humor this guy had, huh?

Firsst book by that I read was " big 2 hearted river'. Later on most of Hemmingways writings. Green Hills of Africa is still my favorite.

Read Robert C. Ruark's African stuff. I think he was better than Hemingway.

It even surpasses the Africa stuff that is really great is 'Islands in the Stream'. They made a very good movie with George C. Scott but being Hollywood obliterated the ending, which in my mind would make a great WWII movie on it's on.

Well, for all the folks who can't get enough of Ernest Hemingway, this is your lucky day.

Turner Classic Movies is showing For Whom the Bell Tolls at 8:00 P.M. this evening, followed by A Farewell to Arms at 11:00 P.M.

Gary Cooper was perfectly suited for some of the roles he played in films over the course of his long and distinguished career.

Unfortunately, these film snoozers aren't two of them.

But to each his or her own.

But, you will notice that there is no magazine in the Thompson and the bolt is probably open. If someone points a brick at me I won't soil my pants.

Yes, I noticed there was no magazine in the gun, but the bolt being "probably open" isn't good enough for anyone who has any sense at all. I'd hope whoever made that photograph knocked Hemingway on his butt for that little stunt.

And a Thompson submachine gun doesn't equate with a brick.
