Heritage series revolvers....Show or GO?

I have been seeing a lot of the gold box Heritage models on the auction sites lately with prices all over the place. But some have been priced very reasonably.

What I would like to know from the other Forum members is do you own a heritage series revolver? Are you happy with it (they look great in the pictures)? And most importantly do you shoot it? Is it comfortable in the hand with the small stock grips?

Every one I see is NIB so I get the feeling not a lot of guys are shooting them. Your replies are appreciated. Thanks, Bob

I put Hogue wooden finger-groove grips on mine (a M24 and a M25, both color-cased), as the factory Altamonts were pretty but uncomfortable to me. I guess by shooting mine I've made all the other ones that are NIB that much more valuable (if you own one that's NIB, you're welcome...).

They both shoot great with my lead bullet reloads, and Turnbull's color-case work is truly eye-watering. They're still the only guns I own that my wife comments on as to their appearance. I think the last time she picked one up from my cleaning table her comment was "Now THAT'S what I'm talking about."

Honestly, I purchased mine because they're so rare and I thought they'd be decent investments. I wasn't prepared for how well they actually work.

I got this 25-12 because I wanted a 1917, but didn't feel like beating up on a nice old gun. Turned out to be a very accurate, very fun shooter. I'm kinda halfheartedly looking for a spare barrel, though. If I can find one, I'll chop it. Anybody got a 1917, 1950 or Mod 22 barrel lying around?

I just bought a 22-4 from a forum member here, NIB. I am VERY pleased with it. Great shooter, built well....as soon as my leather is ready I am moving it up in the inventory...I am going to carry it at work some as well....
Mine is blue steel, and I couldn't be happier...the factory Altamont grips were a no go for me and my hands...
I went to a local fun store to rummage thru the "big box o' grips" they keep in the back. Found some used rubber pachys and a cast off pair of N frame football cutout targets....they need refinishing and have a few nicks, but I can take care of that....out the door 20 bucks for the pair...
The pachy's make it shoot much sweeter......I took the factory grips off and packed them away...

K-22 is a Go!

I have one, a 17-8 K-22. It's very accurate, the action is what you'd expect from the Performance Center and the finish is superb. It even cleans up easily, which I suspect relates to the high polish blue. My wife claimed it the first time she shot it and I had to give up a Colt Woodsman Sport to get it back.

My only complaint is the stocks. The factory slabs show off the case colors nicely, but they're way too small for range work. I tried Combat's, Magna's and Target's and am not really happy with any of them. I prefer a square butt, so I guess need some proper conversion stocks.

Got a K22 also, but haven't gotten around to shooting it yet...maybe tomorrow. I put some Don Collins magnas on it and I'm ready.

Mine work for both show and go.

All the grips except the last Model 15 are by Roy Fishpaw; the last one has Spegel's.

Did Turnbull do the case coloring on the Lew Horton model 15 (from 2001)? What do you think a fair price for that gun would be these days?

I have a 1917 Heritage version.
Very well-built gun, accurate enough, NO LOCK & NO MIMS.
The small grip works fine for SA shooting leisurely, if I wanted to use it for serious purposes I'd put other wood on it.

These are fine S&Ws, I think they're the best the company has put out in recent years.

I put a set of checkered Hogues on my 17-8 (I don't recall the type of wood-they are rb to sb) and I'm pleased with them.

What is reasonably priced? The last one I saw was a K22 that was ANIB and it was priced $825.

Thanks for all the reply's and photos. As I expected, most of you say the grips are too small but the gun itself is excellent.

A comment and question

First, I have a Model 25-11 I bought in April of 2012 from a collection. It appeared unfired. I do not have large hands at all but the grips are too small. I love shooting it and bought it to shoot. But I want better grips. I think I want to try a set of Pachmayr or Hogue. But here is the question? If I order grips what model or frame should I designate for the grips size. I am a newbie about grips and have never bought custom grips. So, let me know. Thanks.

I have a NIB 17-8 that is waiting for a set of Keith Brown round-to-square
conversions that are Coke style. They'll have medallions and will be checkered. Patience!
