Hello Everyone,

I was looking to purchase a Highpoint SW .40. Does anyone have any opinions on this handgun? It looks pretty good, the price well there is no complaining there at all. It is kind of on the heavy side but to me, that's a good thing. I would appreciate any and all comments and suggestions. Any comments and recommendations on ammo is also welcomed.

From an armorer's standpoint, this is sort of a a "giant" F.I E. style auto or similar.....cheaply made. Fit and finish are, well, horrible. A die-cast alloy slide? Seriously?

As one reviewer said....."looks like it fell out of an ugly tree, and hit every branch on the way down." Could there be anything uglier than a glock? Yep.

About the only bright spot is the price.

I have one in 45ACP. Fun handgun, dependable as all heck, chews up any brand ammo, and great trigger. Bought mine a few years ago for $100.00 brand new. I enjoy seeing the looks I get from gun snobs at the range.

Just for future reference, there is a separate sub-forum here for brands other than Smith & Wesson.

You might get more opinions there.
 
Buy a couple extra factory mags and a lot of ammo with the $ your saving. Hi Points like any semi's need to run a couple hundred rounds thru it for break in. They are delayed blow back operated, that's why the slide is cast and heavy. Good luck.
 
They also make a rifle to go along with their 45apc cal handgun. Kinda crude looking but works not all that bad. I have fired both myself.
 
In my neck of the woods, Hi Point 9mm's,used, go for @ $100-$120. They seem to get snapped up pretty quickly when they come up for sale.

However, for something that is easy to use for home protection, especially for the novice, I would highly recommend a revolver. I am sure there are numerous threads on this forum discussing this very topic.
 
I used to be able to say that one HiPoint pistol survived shooting our IDPA matches but then his slide broke during a match.
The owner sent it back and they put a new slide on it.
He says its a great gun with a great warranty: the factory has repaired it 3 times
 
Welcome to the Forum. You will hear pros & cons about Hi Point products, but. most will say they function well with almost any ammunition; have a great warranty, are reasonably priced and just work as designed. I have a 40 carbine that I feed that cheapest ammo I can find and never have had an issue. As far as looks are concerned, well, who really cares how you spend your money? Shoot. Enjoy. Clean. Repeat.
 
have a friend that has a 40 cal. carbine/ hi point, 4 power scope, off the bench @ 25 yds., it will cloverleaf 3 rds. at 100 yds. off the bench, 180 gr. ball, it holds a 1 3/8" group. this was during a rain storm. house defense weapon. same ammo as a pistol. I think the pistols are heavy. but it a choice of the buyer.
 
I have to say since I've polished the feed ramp,blueprinted the moving parts on my ten + year old C-9 she has run flawless,I shoot her weekly then she resides in my trucks tool box

I've seen them and they look like ****. Nevertheless, I understand they are pretty reliable. I also see that they are priced rediculously cheap.

I also understand they are a weapon of choice for gang members and drug dealers.

You can use a Rossi, or an old LLama, or a $100 old surplus military weapon and I won't look down on you. So, in that vein I don't think I'm a snob.

But I WOULD look down on you if you buy something that is preferred by the drug trade.
 
I've sold and tried out several of the Hi-Points but I would recommend any other caliber other than .40 for one. There isn't much out there for under $200 but I'm a believer in you get what you pay for and "life's too short to shoot cheap guns".
 
When I was an Investigator the High Point pistols were indeed popular with the criminal set. Cheap to buy, they didn't care what happened to them and could throw them away after "use".

I recall leaving the courtroom one morning and going past the lockup. There was one defendant in there. Seeing my 4566 hanging on my belt he said; "Yo dog I'm a gunslinger too!" I inquired as to what his sidearm choice was and he replied; "A High Point fo five. It don't hardly ever jam."

He was in for having discharged it at a fellow traveler. 8 feet apart they exchanged 12 rounds. Both survived unscathed.

So there you have it. High Point pistols. Felon approved. Because they hardly ever jam. ;) :) Regards 18DAI
 
No sir................ Will it shoot? Probably..maybe. But Hi-Points are mostly for people who need a "burner". Google it if u don't know. U can pick up a decent used M&P for literally very cheap. A much better quality firearm for sure and one u can depend on. If u are hurting for cash it is much much better than a sharp stick for sure. Quality is not job one with a hi-point. I would for no reason buy one on a person to person buy. U might be purchasing yourself some trouble.
 
Well, one bonus to a Hi-Point is that if it jams or runs dry during a fight, it will make a right fine club......
 
I picked up a 45ACP pistol, two years ago, at my LGS for $5 and gave it to my daughters, then boy friend, now husband. Much to my surprise he managed to figure out witch end the bullets come out of without shooting himself. Still has it, still likes it.
 
I have a 45. Like it. Dependable. great warrantee, haven't had to use (the warrantee). Re: "cheap" IMO: we can pay them (a lot more) to do a whole lot of quality control, or we can do it ourselves and use their great warrantee to make things right if need be. Test your weapon if you think you may need it to be REAL dependable. Heavy: yes, on account of Isaac Newton. Eats up that recoil. Po' folks need self defense too. A plus to the 40 carbine is you can get it to use the pistol mags and you can get it in a planet of the apes monkey stock configuration. What's not to like?
 
Hi Points sell quite well here in rural Wyoming. Not exactly known for being gangstas, people here buy them as working guns. Yep, real cowboys, ranchers, etc buy and use Hi Points.

I have one in .45. I cost me $129 plus tax NIB, so I spent the extra $20 on a spare mag. I remember another guy's sad expression when he borrowed my Hi Point at the range and shot it better than his Ruger 1911.

Kept at home, condition three, a .45 Hi Point is perfectly acceptable.

Really? Sure glad S&W's, Sigs, Kimbers, Glocks, and Taurus etc, aren't used by drug dealers. Get real.

Funny, I find very few of these when I recover contra band.

Perhaps you'd like to expand one how many you've found pursuant to a drug investigation or arrest you've been involved with.

He didn't say those brands were NOT used by felons. You're ASSUMING he did.

Sure, I've found plenty of Glocks, SIGS, S&WS, Colts, etc. on thugs.

What I DO find in disproportionately larger numbers on criminals are Hi-Points.

So again I ask: What do you/have you found in any of your investigations/arrests?

I'm not a LEO, so it's just a guess bad guy's use anything they can steal, borrow or buy on the corner. Am I wrong? Not trying to raise anyone's blood pressure.

Where's the the popcorn.now this forum is judging people cause of maybe what they can afford...at least there made in the USA by a citizen of the USA and hopefully employing USACitizens...hmmmmm...

Actually I think Hi Point is a very durable handgun. I've shot several and never once have I seen one malfunction. Ever.

I think you're mis-interpreting what I am saying. I'm not judging nor am I making suppositions about people because they like Hi-Point. True, not everyone can afford top of the line. I'm not judging anyone because of that either.

What I am doing is explaining what MY experience as a sworn and certified law enforcement officer in the state of North Carolina is. That experience is that a large number of nefarious characters choose Hi Point firearms for the same reason: cheap and reliable. Period. That's all I'm saying.

Perhaps you're the one rushing to judge, because I certainly am not.

I'm going to bow out of the discussion. I enjoy this board.because it is well regulated and polite. I'm not going to chance a suspension or be lured into a mud slinging discussion about cheap pistols.

If you like them, fantastic. The fact remains they are the overwhelming choice of criminals and thugs for the exact same reasons they are desirable: they are cheap and durable. That's not a guess based on what I've read on the internet or how I feel about the pistols. It is a fact based on my real world experience on the street.

So as to not hurt anyone else's feelings, I am not suggesting that if you choose or purchase a Hi Point firearm, that.you are a thug or criminal.
