Hobo Knives

Anyone else into hobo knives. My first experience with one was waay back when I was a young Scout on a Scout pack camping trip and I forgot to pack my mess kit. One of the Scout leaders lent me one for the weekend. Years later I purchased a few here and there for various uses. One for my B O B , one to keep in my truck , a couple others for our camping backpack and the first one that I ever purchased ( and still use ) for when I primitive tent camp.

I'm not really into them, but I bought one several months ago at an estate sale. It has nickel silver bolsters, brass liners, a good carbon steel blade and what appears to be a forged fork. It also has a cork screw, since hobo's only drink fine wine! ;)

It's obviously a quality knife, but there isn't a makers mark or country of origin anywhere. I wish I knew who made it.

I remember having one when I was a kid that was about the size and weight of a brick. It had more tools than you could shake a stick at. I remember the knife blade looked wicked as possible, but was as dull as my sister's diary.

I also remember having a few sets of those at the bottom of your picture that nestled together, but again they were many years ago, when my ex-wife and I were tent camping. I think they came with some kind of "mess kit" type package of aluminum camping pots and such.

It's been a long time since I saw one last. Maybe at a gun show?

Alpo's great looking Kabar hobo knife above is $27 on Amazon. Can't think of why I would need one, but... that's never stopped me so far!
That's pretty much why I got it. I had the three or four Winchester-marked ones. Didn't really need another one. And then I saw that Kabar. It called to me. Have not eaten with it yet, but I've only had it three or four years. But I have it. :)

Those are pretty cool!

Yes, cool looking knives, but I know sure as heck I'd be the first one to stab myself using the spoon without putting the blade back in place. And of all the little tools they put on these knives, why in the world do you need a corkscrew? I could imagine the scenarios for needing one would be few and far between. I guess that would be similar to the leather punch on the Cub Scout knife.

I cut the corkscrew off of mine. I still have the scar on the side of mt thumb where I cut myself on the corkscrew when putting my hand in my pocket. A leather punch would/could be more useful to a 10 year old than a corkscrew........

"And here's your plastic spork, sir. Oh, I see you have it covered."

I was at a covered dish dinner, when I was either in high school or early college. We were given plastic silverware, and they had sliced roast beef. So after attempting one pass over the meat with the plastic knife, I pulled out my pocket knife and started cutting the meat.

The lady sitting on the other side of the table watched for a moment, then asked if I cleaned my toenails for that knife. I laid it down and pulled out my other pocket knife and informed her that I clean my toenails with it. Then I offered her the first one - if you would care to use this - and carefully wiped the blade of the second one with a napkin and then started cutting my meat again with the second knife.

And she and her husband shared that first knife between them so they could eat their supper.

And when they finished, she wiped the knife blade off carefully on her napkin, and thanked me very nicely as she handed it back.
