HOF announcer and former MLB catcher Tim McCarver dies at 81

Damn I'm aging quick this week. Former HOF announcer and MLB catcher for the Cardinals, Phillies, Expos and Red Sox Tim McCarver has passed away of heart failure at 81. He was pretty much the personal catcher for HOF pitchers Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton. He once said he intended to be buried 60' 6" from Carlton.

Sad news ..... Tim McCarver was one of my favorite players when I was a teenager. Great player and a good guy.

He was a gifted announcer, every bit as pleasant to listen to as Vin Scully. He didn't over-analyze every situation like one prominent ex-pitcher. Scully and McCarver are missed.

And he was only 4 months younger then me!....

The downside of the 24-hour news cycle. We are hit with the loss of the performers/names who were young adults when we were children, individuals we followed on media and film over the years. At least we can say that people like McCarver and Raquel Welch led full and meaningful lives which were not cut unnaturally short by trauma or illness. What is really difficult is the recent loss of so many guys I worked with, 8 in the last 2 years...
