HOGDONS HS6

Haven't had any luck finding pistol powers in about six months. Today, I finally found some HS6, a powder with which I am totally unfamiliar. I load 9's, 38's, 40's, 44's and both .45ACP and .45 Colt. Any expert opinion on this powder choice. From the loading manual it appears to be an acceptable choice.

HS-6 is a premier powder for upper mid range loadings in pistol cartridges.
It shines as a 9mm propellent, is not ideal in standard .38 (Special) and .45 Colt.
The use of magnum primers is helpful in standard pressure loadings.

FWIW; I use HS-6 in 9mm, .38 Super, .41 mag and +P .45 Colt.
All are upper range loads.

I too have just discovered HS-6. So far I've had great results in 44 special, 44 magnum and 45 Colt.

I just wish it took up more space in the case.

great powder in the warmer loads. Check out the Hornady #3 load manual for the .45 acp and the 230 grain ball.

Like it even better in 9mm

Good to hear some is showing up. I'm down to about 4 lbs. I use it in my 9's , 40's, and 45 acp. Seems to work best with Heavy Bullets and Warm-ish loads.

Its great for 38+p SD loads! Under a Jacketed HP or gas check lead HPs in a J-Frame S&W in a IWB and speed strips and.... oh, sorry, got carried away.

Lyman's 49th manual shows a lot of loads using it. Love it in
mid/warm 357 loads.

I'm a huge fan of W540/HS-6, it's one of the 3 handgun powders I use most.

It a great choice for the 9mm and 40 S&W.

It's not so good in standard pressure .38 Special ammo but works well with +P pressures.

The 45 ACP is a low pressure round so HS-6 does not work very well BUT I was very surprised at how well HS-6 works in the 45 Colt. I used to load mostly W231 and some Red Dot in the 45 Colt until I tried HS-6, now it's almost all I use. (I'm running low and need to find more)

I don't load for the .44 often and I have never tried HS-6 so I can't comment on that combination.

I use a lot if it and was pleased to see some 8lb containers at the last gunshow we attended. as mentioned it works well in the mid to upper ranges. I've had good luck in 10mm and 44mag as well as 45LC

HS-6 is great rocket fuel for 9mm & .40. In revolver cartridges it does best with magnum primers and a good crimp. Might be a bit messy in .45acp.
